On the tint thing, I call 4000K Warm White because it simply is not neutral, it adds color to white, which is not neutrality. Shine it on a pure white piece of typing paper and the paper looks orange. Shine it on snow and , well, don’t they say never eat yellow snow? In science, the black body is a radiant subject, I have read that on Earth, fresh snow is considered to be a near perfect black body as it has nearly 100% radiance. Pure white. Clouds rate exceedingly high as well. Pure white. Neither blue nor yellow, green nor orange, Neutral, in othe words. No tint. In my beamshot of the OEM GT shining at the moon which is partially behind clouds, the spot of orange from the GT can be plainly seen on the clouds, thereby furthering my explanation that orange is not neutral.

As a photographer I see this as a very important issue, the ability to shine a white light on something without changing the hue of that item. That is very important to me. I cannot call an orange hue neutral for that reason.

Perhaps some people’s camera’s cannot distinguish the slight differences, but I paid top dollar for a top-of-the line best in class camera that indeed can distinguish the subtleties, as well as having a professional monitor and a colorimeter to keep it honest. I DO know the difference between white, and not white. It’s a $5000 wedding dress that is rendered correctly in an image. I know y’all are all very happy to get the GT at the price point, as am I, and I’m not trying to say there’s anything inherently wrong with the light, but considering I pay $500-600 for my flash units that shoot at 5700K to expose an image properly, the line is a fine one. The camera I used to shoot those beam shots just happens to be the best low light camera Canon makes, period. The lens I chose is also among the highest quality offered, so please don’t insult the photo’s by assuming a camera cannot detect the subtleties of hues, it’s really not plausible to get a better result at any price.

Why does the white building appear yellow in the CW shot

and

white in the NW shot?

.

Did you mixup the images or am I looking at it wrong?

I don’t think he mixed up the pictures but he used auto white balance. On the control shot the house appears to be white because the camera adjusts the white balance to something like 2700 – 3200 K – that is the colour temperatur of the light illuminating the building. On the CW shot the camera adjusts the white blanace to higher Kelvin values probably around the colour temperatur of the CW LED – maybe to 5500 – 6500 K?? The result is that the building now appears yellow cause it is still illuminated by the 2700 – 3200 K light source. On the NW (WW) shot the camera adjusts the white balance to around 4000 K I would guess. The result is that the building only has a slight yellow hue and doesn’t appear as yellow as on the CW shot.

I would have loved to see the comparsion shots with a fixed white balance at maybe 5700 K – could that be the temprature of sunlight around midday with clear sky in Texas? Well, it doesn’t matter cause I don’t have a calibrated monitor anyway.
The pictures show that the GT hits the tower 1.9 miles away in stock form and modded with a CW emitter and thats awesome. Thanks for the pictures Dale. But people should just wait till their GT arrives and try it – what you see on your display is not what you will see in real life.

On a site note, for me a black body is the opposit of snow – it absorbs all visible light, snow reflects it.

Nah, maybe you mean it’s on the extremely warm side of neutral white? I agree with that.

“Extremely warm” looks very yellow.

It depends on application.
Shining no.2 at distanced trees or in the jungle will be most comfortable.
No. 1 is good for office paper work.
No. 3 looks good on trees and grass fields or jungles too.

cool i'll see you when you get there

I’m not finding my springs to weak. I am finding, due to the amount of ‘button top’ actually sticking above the white insulating washer & the clear wrapping; it is a close fit between making contact on the positive battery end AND not making contact.

The battery carriers are just fine.

If one has a problem…… it will be with “short” button tops.

Probably a good idea to check carrier voltage if in doubt.

I have been asked by Mr. Thomas King to attempt to offer an apology and also an explanation for his actions tonight regarding the giving away of the “NOT TO BE SHARED” info from the GT PMs. Please bear with me.

Ok, first off I’m only jumping in the middle of this because I’ve known Thomas from FB for a while and I’ve never known him to be anything other than a decent guy. I understand what happened here and everyone has every right to be extremely upset. However, (I’m no one of any importance in the flashlight world) but I will vouch for Thomas in that all he ever wanted to do was help out people who had contacted him asking how they might get a GT.

He remembered how he paid for his GT, BUT SOMEHOW FORGOT ABOUT THE WARNING ABOUT NOT SHARING THE INFO. I know that’s messed up, but I personally paid for mine and I didn’t even remember reading that message until it was brought up tonight. I’m sure I read it too and I certainly didn’t share it. Anyway, he shared it. OUCH!

But I contacted him through messenger because everyone was cursing him terribly and I knew he would never do anything like this on purpose. It took a while but I was finally able to explain to him what he had done… and he is mortified. Yes he insisted he had permission, but as I suspected, he was referring to permission he had gotten from an FB admin. (IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE FB ADMIN IS NOT TO BLAME… AS THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT THEY COULD HAVE UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE WAS ASKING PERMISSION TO SHARE…. I ASSUME THEY THOUGHT HE KNEW OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO SELL THEIR GT).

So I explained to him that by sharing he was allowing new buyers to jump in front of guys who were already on the list and waiting to pay. He DID NOT fully comprehend that until just a few moments ago, and like I said, he is embarrassed and very, very sorry. So please accept Thomas’s apology. He’s a good guy and his reputation among the flashlight community is very important to him. He goofed… he messed up. But I’d like to see everyone treat him with respect, because he didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

Thanks for reading.

Could you please ask him if he shared that purchase info with anyone before he posted it on FB? If so, maybe Neal can find those orders and cancel them as well (assuming he shared it before that FB post).

Thanks

Oh wow…A FB post with a link to buy..? That’s hardcore, hopefully it didn’t go viral.. Was the link changed or deleted at the source rather than just from FB?

Does this now effect the new list of people wanting the BLFGT?

It shouldn’t change much. A few orders might need to be canceled. Madmax will have to redo a lot of things. New PM and passwords will need to go out to existing people who have not bought theirs yet. Then maybe another new password for when the next group of people are sent purchasing info. I don’t really know all the details, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Things are in good hands.

Thanks Dale for taking the great effort doing these shots and thanks Sirius for the mouse-over version that makes comparison very easy .

Obviously people who judge this comparison will prefer the cool white led because in the pictures it clearly lights up the target better. As effort is made by Dale to make the comparison as equal as possible it makes sense to get this opinion which contradicts the ‘Giggles’ team who tells us that the 4000K leds will light up the target better.

But there’s two observations that I have about this picture set that makes me unsure about using this comparison to determine my opinion of which tint is best:

1) as already pointed out, the white balance seems not equal over those two images, as is easiest judged by the light coming from the streetlamp in front of that house.
2) the difference in illumination on the the hedge, trees and water tower between the two pictures is huge, I estimate it even maybe a factor 2. Much more than one or two output bins or a tint difference could cause.

So perhaps the camera, even though everything was set on manual, may have done things automatically after all?

Have a look at the original photos and it is obvious the white balance is playing a part in this. The light in the porch of the house changes colour and I cant get over how much more spill one tint is giving considering the grass in the forefront is lit up in one and not the other.

Sure it’s a great example but I can’t see them as like for like examples because they are clearly different. THANKS though. seriously. I’m not ungrateful.

I'm not finding my springs to weak. I am finding, due to the amount of 'button top' actually sticking above the white insulating washer & the clear wrapping; it is a close fit between making contact on the positive battery end AND not making contact. *_The battery carriers are just fine._* If one has a problem...... it will be with "short" button tops. Probably a good idea to check carrier voltage if in doubt.

I used a couple nail files, one to depress and hold the bottom coils of the springs, the other file in-between the upper coils of the springs. I then stretched carefully to extend the coils. This made the spring overall height about 1/8" taller, providing more pressure against the battery. That in-turn has more force pushing the button "top" to make better contact. The 35E added buttons are a bit small, and low profile. IIRC, the GT was planned to have protected button tops as/per Lumintop specs. I can only assume this is the answer why the non-protected tops do not have the spec'd length. Your use of words are clearer than my short, non-descriptive choice of what little I presented myself with. Which made me think, make more sense ARsee. Sorry everyone for being vague. This was not intentional. I have a problem with word input oops

I still plan on solder blobbing the tops for better electrical contact, and spring pressure. With my carriers, when I rotate them with the 35E batteries installed, some of them fall right out. This can't be good.

1 ask Thomas King to call the names of the people he PMed on Facebook. He knows who he send the link and password.

2 the 4000k led was used because there were no other more nw leds available. So if you don’t like it, change it to a ledcolor of your choice.

No, the Lumintop batteries they were going to offer were unprotected.

The carriers were designed to handle both protected and unprotected. That is 65mm to 70mm. A 5mm difference and the springs can only compress maybe 7mm? So Lumintop got them just right. Thumbs Up
