I bought an L2 of a fellow skippy and have been thinking about modding it.
I want it to throw to around 200m + but with good spill.
My recipe is a 6V MTG2 driven at 4.5 amp by a single Mode Buck
2x 26650 Keepower 5000mah cells for extended run times.
What do the brains trust think?

You’re probably gonna have problems with cooling if it’s single-mode at 4.5amps

Also if your only goal is 200m+ throw, it should easily do more then that in stock form.
With a low bin XP-L HI mine does 750m of throw.
The MT-G2 will also not throw as far as a smaller LED but it will put out a more floody beam with more lumens.
So it depends on what you are wanting out of the light.
If you want a great all around performer, might want to consider getting an L6.

For an MT-G2? Well it can handle upwards of 10 amps, it is just a matter of what you want.
Although I highly recommend using a driver with modes so you can turn down the power when it is not needed. A single mode driver is very limited.

The L6 had a useable throw of more than 200m, so I’m sure a stock L2 will surpass that!

L2 with XHP50 at 4A will easily throw over 300m
bot donut hole with SMO
The thing is the L6 has everything you want
L6 has a much bigger reflector compared to the L2.

He already has the L2 so it makes sense to mod it rather than get an L6. The MTG2 will not throw as well as other emitters, but with the L2 reflector it will prob throw out to 200m ok. It really depends on how much light you want to throw to 200m; try the MTG2 and see how you like it. I think slicing the dome off increases the throw for this emitter also. As others have said, I would recommend a driver with modes

The L6 is in the Bucket list and would probably would have been on its way if the L2 had not turned up in the classifieds here and local.
I have a Solarforce M9 that I have modded with a dedomed XPL HI so the thrower is covered.
Also a Solarforce K3 that comes fitted with a MT-G2 standard.
Great torch with a beautiful tint but just a bit short on throw.
This one I use for night work on the bunnies and foxes in close.
The L2 is a torch just to scratch that itch as I do not have a 26650
oh I do have an XHP 70 on the shelf but the donut :person_facepalming:

If you simply want an MT-G2 light (I have been wanting one as well, thinking about a 1504 host for it) then go for it, I simply recommend a better driver with modes over a single mode driver.

L2 with XHP-35 is also good option. Just need boost driver.
