Thrunite C2 USB Portable Charger Doesn't Work With Low Current Devices

Got my Thrunite C2 yesterday. At first, I was thrilled that I was able to charge my Moto X from 40% to 100% and still had battery life left. That’s where the thrill ended. I connected various low draw devices and none of them would keep the C2 powered up for more than 10 to 15 seconds except for my Nitecore Tip, which would only charge about half way.

Devices I’m tried so far that won’t charge or run for more than 10 to 15 seconds

An unloaded USB Detector
An Xtar UL1 USB light on it’s low setting
a 4th gen iPod Shuffle
Jetbeam Mini 1 USB rechargeable flashlight.

I’ve sent Thrunite an email about the problem. Hopefully they’ll get back to me

Yeah, this is the problem with many power banks…
It’s to save battery capacity and thus turn the boost converter off when charging is done.

I hope they send out a replacement/refund to OP. Thrunite has a good rep, so I’m sure it will get taken care of.

I tried these devices on my Anker and it didn’t shut down. On the other hand, I plugged my Shuffle into my Xiaomi portable charger and it did shut down after a couple of minutes. Very interesting

I have the same problem with the C2.

I tested it with two different USB lights and both shut down between 10-15 seconds.

Also sent them a mail about this issue. So far I was informed, that it was forwarded to the after sale service and I will be contacted soon.

I saw your post in the C2 review thread. So far I haven’t gotten a response from Thrunite

Being a small portable single cell charger, it should be able to charge small devices. Tell me I’m wrong.

The low current cutoff is set too high, a common flaw with many power banks. The cooyoo variant of the mini lights draw at least 200mA, so I guess the C2 has even higher cutoff than that.
This is why the xiaomi USB LED light has a fixed minimum current draw of ~200mA even in the lowest modes, it uses a tiny FET to burn the power. Very inefficient but I guess it fixes this problem.
The tip draws 700mA but quickly drops out of CC phase due to the small battery.
The newest xiaomi powerbank which I’m reviewing has a special mode to disable low current auto-off, it will remain ON for a couple hours when activated.

Will, that sounds great. I will be ordering one of those. In the meantime, my single cell Xtar SP1 stays on with all my low current devices while my Xiaomi 10400 mAh portable USB charger doesn’t. I’m glad Xiaomi has improved their product.

That made me laugh, and your correct, i had the same thought from the letter
Probably a boiler plate response

What is a boiler plate response? I’ve never heard that term before. And no spring chicken! lol!

Boilerplate letters are form letters, a standard template you would send to everyone, for example you just change the recipients name
In this case they would assume its a warranty issue and not a design flaw that it might be.

It could be a Canadian term

No matter how old you are (and I’m old) you learn something new every day. :+1:

Did you let them know it was not a defective product but a design flaw?

Maybe they’re thinking you unit shuts off after some time no matter what is connected… It would be funny if they sent you an exact same one without the fix, might as well ask for a third one until they realize what’s wrong.

Nah, your young at heart :sunglasses:

It does however have its own wikipedia entry
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boilerplate\_(text)

I told them it charges my smartphone to 100% and still doesn’t turn off. Anything that draws small amounts of current shuts it off within 15 seconds. It’s a problem with the low-end current threshold that needs to be lowered like you said.

Thanks. I’ll be 65 this coming May, but I feel 60…Just kidding! I honestly feel like I’m still in my 20’s

I wish i felt like i was in my 20s, but thats a long story
I will laugh if they send you another with the same flaw, though it would be annoying on your end, lets hope they fix the problem before sending replacement

I’ll laugh too. But I hope I don’t have too. Just sent them another email just to make sure they understand it’s a design problem, not a defective unit.

Wow…whoda thunk it??? I’m totally flabbergasted
