Hi, so I want to measure current more accurately (tail cap amps etc) so am thinking of getting a clamp meter.
Now I know that I need to get one that specifically does DC current as a lot of the cheap clamp meters do AC & DC voltage but only AC current.
Auto ranging would be nice also.
I am looking at the UNI-T 210E & UNI-T 204, there is not a lot of difference in price both being around £30/$38 delivered from ebay UK.
The 210E is 2000 counts & DC Current (A)：2A/20A/100A ±(2%+3)
The 204 is 4000 counts & DC Current (A) : 40A/400A +/- (2%+3)
I take it that the 210E would give more accurate readings at the low current amps of a flashlight, due to the lower amp range of 2A/20A/100A compared to the 204”s 40A/400A range, even though the 210E only has 2000 counts compared to the 204”s 4000 counts ?
Or are there any better options in this sort of price range ?
I am looking to pull the trigger this weekend so that I can get it in time for xmas, from my wife

I don’t know the 204 but I am using the 210E for almost a year now and can highly recommend this device. I consider the ability to read low currents important.
I have the 210E as well. I’m very pleased with it. The readings compare favorably with my Fluke 189.

I think that I will get the 210E but I will pay the extra $8 & get it from ebay UK as if I get it from China it will be at least 3-4 weeks before I get it due to Xmas & New Year.

This is the lowest amperage reading I could get with my fan cooled load tester. Still fairly accurate.
Lighted tailcap takes much less current so not usable for this purpose.
Agreed. What do you expect for less than $30. The load tester I built has a cooling fan in circuit. That’s the readings you see on the displays. I’m going to put a bypass switch to shut the fan off when reading low currents. I’ll do that tomorrow and do another test.

Lower currents you can always measure with a shunt resistor

also agreed. I don’t think the measuring method clamp meters use is reliable at that low current in general. I use my clamp for high current, normal DMM for tiny current.

The Fluke 289 was calibrated less than a year ago. The 210E was zeroed before taking this measument.
Even at that range it’s starting to get off. I’ve tried it on my illuminated tailcaps before, it usually just says a big fat 0. The 210E is a great meter, totally worth the money, but clamps are not for every situation.
What I like the most is of UT210E is the support of AAA instead of regular 9V cell. My eneloop batteries still works after 6mth.
