Can you recommend any good source for optics?

Perhaps my google-fu is rusty but I can’t seem to find a decent source for optics w/o needing to buy a minimum qty of 100 or so.

Among my leftover stash I came across an old brass Peak 1AAA light that I had swapped emitters ages ago (I forget the model name.)

I think it came with a luxeon I or something (heavily potted.) I had swapped in some sort of red emitting LED (I forget which but along the Lux I or III generation.)

In any case I don’t believe I touched the light after it was modded. I just dug it out over an old storage bag. I’m now thinking of updating the light to something currently more useful to me. For me a silent activating low level high CRI light would be usefully for nighttime walks to the bathroom. Also I’m now partial to having my indoor lights using a very floody optic.

The optics I have on hand are unsuitable as they are all around 20mm+ in diameter. With this Peak I will need an optic with a ~16mm diameter & a ~14mm height (my ballpark measurement.) Can anyone recommend a good source for a place with a good selection & no quality minimum purchase requirements?

Thanks!

I’ve ordered Carclo triple optics from LEDsupply.com. Not sure they’ll have what you’re looking for, but there’s no minimum order and free shipping on orders under 13oz.

For a simpler flood option, have you considered diffusing the output rather than rebuilding with optics?

d-c-fix is an adhesive diffusing film and is available from a couple of members in small quantities. It’s easily cut into a circle with scissors and adhered to the outer surface of the lens. I’ve heard of some folks using two layers to increase the effect.

BLF member RobertB has recently shared his discovery of Luminit film with us. He’s working on making it available to us in small quantities, as it is quite expensive. It is not adhesive, so it needs to be installed behind the lens/optics.

My post in the thread I’ve linked includes some beamshots I took comparing the two products.

Sites like mountain electronics, fasttech, kaidomain all carry optics, you just need to find the right one.

Thanks 4 that site. I’ll go take a look now.

& yes at times I will just diffuse a lens. Outside of using the films I’ve also tried & had good luck just using an acrylic diffusion spray or for an even more permanent solution have had lens very lightly beadblasted.

BUT this light came with a stock plastic lens & a plastic reflector. When I originally modded it I didn’t care enough to swap them for higher quality parts. At this point when I refresh the light I would like to eliminate those parts.

You’re welcome! :+1:

I’ve seen several examples of modders sanding down optics to reduce the diameter. Not sure if that could also work to reduce the height.

Good luck with your search, and keep us updated on your project!

Not 1st hand knowledge but to my understanding the front of the optic can be reduced but the reduction of diameter of the optic is limited up to where the cone is present. I think the optical qualities will suffer if this area is touched.

Hmm, I think the diameter of my host limits my optic choices to 10mm optics. As such I think I may just replace the lens with a DIY frosted/etched plastic one. I do NOT want a glass one b/c this light does easily roll & I want a shatterproof lens.

We’ll see how the beam looks. Hopefully a DIY lens won’t cut the output too much. Anyhow, as this light is not driven hard I’m hoping that impact will be minimal.

Thanks again,
