Best Thrower around $60 - Spring 2017

Been searching for a good thrower but most of the threads are pretty old and many of the recommended lights are no longer available.

I have some extra 26650’s that would be nice to use but 18650 is also ok.

I like Convoy and the L2 sounded promising but it’s not available. The Ultrafire HD2010 sounded good, but not available.

So what are the currently available 400m + throwers in the $60 price range these days?

Thanks

I am partial to the Utorch UT02 (manker U21 clone). Gearbest is selling them for $43 shipped:

http://www.gearbest.com/led-flashlights/pp_555779.html

I bought two for myself and have sold a couple as well. Built in USB Charging, 1300 LM, 700M of throw. In tests it actually outdid the Manker U21 though I’m not really sure how, it’s got Manker guts.

The nitecore P30 is also a nice light and very handy size. 18650 battery, dual switches and a nice UI. 1000 lumens and 675 meters of throw. I can get you one for $65 shipped in the U.S.

“Utorchdeal” coupon on Gearbest gets you the UT02 for $39.99. Just noticed that.

Of course you cant go wrong with the Convoy L2. I have one and got one for my neighbor. Tried and true, plenty of heatsink and simple UI. It’s way underrated in my opinion.

Lots of us ordered the new Thorfire S70s at AliExpress for less then $40 (Elfeland store kicks in some coupons automatically) so expect a lot of input on this.

If the s70 really reaches that far, it’s prettty impressive. It seems to give up a bit to the convoy in overall lumen output. I expect candlepower output to be extremely similar in that both are running XHP70 quad die. I couldn’t find forward voltage rating for the Thorfire but I have seen the Convoy tested at 5.8A. I have not personally held the Thorfire so I can’t compare build quality to the Convoy. How well is it made?

Lumen output on stock lights is about the same.
The S70 is under-rated by Thorfire with most reporting 3,600-3,800 (myself included) compared to the Convoy“s 3800 lumens with a CW emitter.
I do not have an L6 to compare but I think the build is very good on the S70 & possibly handles heat a little better from what I have read plus it has the illuminated mode switch & comes with a carrying sling & spares package.
I was waiting for the clear L6 to become available with an illuminated side switch but I have just ordered an S70s Wink
At least 4000 lumens for $37 was just to good a deal to pass up Thumbs Up

Could be talking out of my (bleep) — but I’d heard great things about the MAXToch SN6×-2X. Is it obsolete now?

The S70/S70s is not a thrower as such but it does light up a long long way due to the massive lumen output Thumbs Up
At $38 it is probably the best bang for buck high powered light out there & is very well built, like a tank Smile
I am guessing that the same simple solder blob mod will up the out put to around 5000-5200 lumens the same as on the stock S70 Wink
TBH though the stock light at about 4000 lumens is very very bright as it is Smile

According to Matt at ASF a stock L6 will do 75500Lux, and adding Simons smooth reflector will bump that by 13000 and land you near 88550. That should be right around $60
https://youtu.be/TRp8WxJsivw
Unfortunately those are just arbitrary numbers without a direct comparison to other lights, and I can’t really say how far that translates…. others no doubt will have more experience and can hopefully comment.

I could have sworn he tested/reviewed a U21 / UT02… But I guess not, bummers that would have been more useful.

One things for sure, big reflector designs are not cheap. In this price range its going to be hard to beat an L6 or S70s.

Curious how does the L6, S70s compare to the L2 with its smaller die and smooth reflector?

Yeah, I ordered an S70s a few days ago on Ali and it was $36.48 but I think the price has crept upwards. (Still a solid deal)! Shipped out and I got a tracking # the following day from placing my order.

That’s odd because I didin’t think the S70s is even a thrower like the L2 is
In terms of visible, use-able light (not measurable light), does the L2 put use-able, visible light on a target further down range than the S70 or S70s ?

In other words, if the S70/S70s can put as much visible/use-able light on a target as far downrange as the L2, but the S70’s also provide more scatter light, wouldn’t that make the S70’s a better purchase?

Please remember, I’m looking for a thrower as I already have a Convoy L6

Of course the S70s or a light with XHP70 is not a dedicated thrower perse BUT come on, for around $40 the S70S and for around $50 the L6 just produce such a blast of light they reach pretty far (say at 300-400 meters things can be seen.)
Butit is not in a pencil beam, the S70S and L6 light up a whole field, not only a small spot.

It was $42 less a $3 discount & $2 off coupon so $42 less $5 = $37 Thumbs Up
It is now at $43 with a $2 coupon (the $3 discount has gone) so $41.
It is still a hell of a light for $41 Wink

S70 and L6 aint throwers, they do spill alot: sometimes its usefull, sometimes not
For 60$ ro arround that the best one you could buy is Olight M2X: easy moddable , light( 220 grams), easy to carry, 240+cds easy reaching even with its default driver and the lame HI emitter inside, if modded like it should be youll get 300+ cds

Do you know if that Olight M2X and Jetbeam M1X has the same internal design? I would like to know if I can mod my M1X like M2X.

I think the Maxtoch lights are still really good throwers, but are a little above $60, more like $80 unless there’s a discount code or group buy. The M24 got really good reviews stock: dedomed LED, direct thermal path, and AR glass.
The SN6×-2X is discontinued so it will be hard to find unless you can convince Maxtoch to make an upgraded one (I saw that there’s an upgraded M12 on aliexpress). It had a larger reflector than the M24 and was super nice build quality as is all their lights, I have one of the original versions and really like it. It came with a domed emitter and I think non-AR glass, but with some modifying it could be made to really throw.

Nope m8, M1X is a bit different inside, it has a pill desing plus its reflector is kinda weaker: yet it could end up fairly okay one if tuned properly yet its modding isnt that lovely

Late M1X revisions dont have a pill btw, the last one i`ve modded was different yet the reflector was the same

Zebrette, if you have the Convoy L6 but are looking for more of a thrower, don’t get the Throfire S70. Pretty much the same thing. I have both, great lights and they throw way out there, I’d give the nod to the Throfire as it has a lighted button which you can see in the deep dark woods but would be hard pressed to say which threw farther. They’re both excellent.

Anyone going to pitch the Q8? Smile

Hearing from someone who does have both is great!
Thank you sir!

The price really IS fantastic on the Thorfire s70.
Imagine holding a Thorfire S70s in one hand and a Convoy L6 in the other, both on Turbo downrange at the same time….:-)

The L2 has a tiny hotspot compared to the L6. It’s a much weaker emitter (1000 to 1200 lumen?) compared to the 3800 to 4000 lumen of the L6 and S70.

I don’t care for small hotspots like the L2 and xhp35 lights have so I did like Matt and converted my L6 into a thrower. My numbers are lower across the board compared to Matts, but I did double my lux and the results are noticable.

There are some warehouses where I work that non of my lights could reach, but I can get them now. Smile

Plus, I can toss in my original OP reflector and get a fatter, but less far reaching, beam.
