Another vote for a future FW3A batch or retail option with Nichias instead of the garbage XP-G3s. I had the chance to play with an Emisar D4 with the 90CRI 5000k 219Cs and the light quality completely blew me away. So much that I ordered it on the spot from my smartphone.
I agree with this. Is there any real reason not to use nichia in this light? The cost difference can’t be that great, and we as flashlight enthusiasts should all be voting with our wallets against shitty tinted LEDs.
I would also love to see nichias used. I’d even prefer xp-g2 over the xp-g3. In my experience xp-g3 does not not look good through a tir optic. The tintshift is too much and makes the spill look horrible no matter how good the hotspot looks.
I love the new matte tapered finish, I’m now more excited for this light.
I’d prefer it, however, with Nichia or XP-L HI emitters, I’m not a fan of the XP-G3s.
Neutral White – XP-L HI V2 5D, 4000K would add additional output, nice tint and not the additional heat of the Nichia. Light is too small to risk more heat issues.
XP-L HI emitters cost a lot more though. I give that about zero chance of happening, based on how cheap this light is priced. In fact the originators of this group buy have spoken and having any different emitter choice has already been ruled out.
You want something besides XP-G3? Great, you can build it yourself. I will be doing the same. This light is cheap enough at its current price that it could be shipped to me as an empty host + driver and I’d still be very happy with it.

FWIW, I upgraded the thermal regulation behavior. I still need to do some extensive testing on it, but hopefully it will behave. Specifically, it adjusts the output in about 640 very small steps until it thinks it is no longer too hot or too cold… and the adjustment speed now changes depending on how far it needs to go. Additionally, the adjustments are based on the projected future temperature, which works like a car trying to “steer into” the curves.
Hopefully this will allow it to react quickly but also avoid oscillations after it has reached a maintainable level. I won’t know for sure until I test it though, and that takes a while.

This thermal regulation is, in my opinion, the greatest advancement in flashlight tech since the XML was released way back when. When the temps are cold this time of year, the light is smart enough to know it doesn’t have to ramp down as much, if at all.
Because the design has chanced any change that it will be made of a straight / thicker tube for more thermal mass (and so a better temp regulation and a longer higher output)?
