Review of Fenix PD40R

For the last couple of days I have had the pleasure of getting to test and evaluate the Fenix PD40R. If you are interested in purchasing this light you can find it here https://goo.gl/BdzCFJ and BangGood has given me a coupon code good for 20 percent off. At checkout enter code 17NTC

Before I begin I want to thank BangGood for asking and shipping the light for me to test and review. So let me get the disclosure out of the way and I will give you some of the findings from testing.

The light was provided to me by Banggood.com for my honest and unbiased review. I will in no way speak of or infer that a product is better than it is. What you read will be the truth and my honest opinion.

I have read a ton about this light and the biggest problem anyone had was that it only holds the 3000 + lumen turbo mode for about 90 seconds before stepping down.

Before I start diving into numbers please everyone remember that Photobucket has really dropped a bomb on many of us. I have been reviewing products for almost 20 years. It use to all be music gear but my addiction to lights has led me to many more reviews. It will probably take me 2 months to get all of those images hosted again and posted to the correct reviews.

For this review and one I am posting just a few minutes after I finish this one you will see mostly video. The wife and I have decided to start looking for a much better quality video camera. We have the Rebels for still shots but I need a much better video camera.

On to the real numbers. Here are the claims by the manufacturer for light output for the Fenix.

Turbo 3000 lumen My reading 3225 lumen @ 6.56 amp. (you read that right, even got as high as 7 a couple of times)

High 1000 lumen My reading was 1294 lumen @ 2.48 amp

Med 350 lumen My reading was 371 lumen @ .200 mA

Eco 20 lumen My reading was 21.5 lumen @ .050 mA

As you can see from my own readings and measurements the Fenix not only performed as claimed but outperformed. To the right you will see my actual measured lumen output as well as the currant for each of the lighting levels.

You will see in the video that in turbo pushing that kind of currant that light gets very hot very fast. It has to step down. At one point I got temperatures of 120 F at the base of the head.

I like the light thus far. It is not too big or too small and when you need light it is right there waiting for you.

A couple of drawbacks is the 26650 is a bit oversize and, really kicks out some power. It measures 70mm X 26.6mm. I tried and tried to get it into my DN70 but the spring is just to tall. And it tells you in the instructions that any other 26650 is not enough to hit the turbo mode. None of mine were. If anyone learns of who is making that cell for them let us all know lol.

I have to go outside now and video some beam shots so I can get them posted. I should have it all done in and hour or so depending on YouTube upload times.

If anyone has any questions please just send me a message or an email and I will help in any way I can... I am sorry for so little photo content, I will try to make up for it in videos.

BangGood may send me a discount code for this light in a day or two so check back. They are usually pretty decent discounts.

Hope everyone got something from this... I would purchase this light just for the power to size ratio.
