RobinHood's/Parts box GAW

Here my idea.

Many of us have “extra” currently non productive parts.

If we were to pass around an extra parts box then many of us could benefit from others “extras” yes its a flashlight wealth redistribution scheme (but entirely voluntary).

I was the beneficiary of a number of emitters from which I took 2
then I added some 18650 cells, a flashlight “host” (a dead dive light)
lots of C8 cell extensions
misc electronic components
two soraa mr16 bulbs
small copper buss bar
and “other stuff” I cant remember.

What my goal is to have this traveling parts box become bigger and more complete over time (sort of like litter, make it nicer then the way you found it, kind of idea

So here is the proposal.

So the basic plan is to “auction” off the box, as in give me a pitch for what you can add (parts not money)(the focus of this is to add value to the box and pay it forward) Thus the RobinHood’s parts box.

I will ship it my cost to that “winner” (shipper can choose any criteria they like to choose the winner, heck the criteria might even change over time!

The “winner” then has 30 days to use anything in the box, unused items go back in the box so the next soul has a chance to USE the parts.

I envision this as opportunity to find missing part(s) needed to finish projects, not as a way to make a personal kit and set it aside for 6 months (thus becoming just more unused inventory) if you get my drift.

Each winner will be expected to add their contribution and make a new thread, choose the next recipient (the sender pays the postage) and get it posted in 30 days or less. That way if we play our cards right on a monthly basis we will be having an additional member posting of the RobinHood’s parts box.

Now if your situation is such that you don’t really have much to ad but you can make excellent use of the RobonHood’s parts box feel free to make your case in the thread, or if too modest (pun intended, get it?) a PM will also be accepted.

This is not meant to be prickly thing, just simply an opportunity for us to individually to thin our non productive parts (any and all flashlights or parts there of are accepted) to be passed on so that the winner with enough gumption and initiative can make use of the windfall (before sending unused parts on again in 30 days or less).

Sound good?

Any questions?

The floor is open

Enjoy

P.S. as this is meant to be an on going thing and not a once off event this is more wham bam then long drawn out process unlike mfg give a ways my goal is not to get the max number of people (ie sales leads) it is simply to get it kicked off in such a way that it keeps moving under its own steam.

This is a great idea! I am sure that I could add some bits to it as well. I always have some kind of host laying around that I have not finished and may not finish… Plenty of working drivers that have been pulled form project lights, leds abound as well.

Guys and gals, please let’s make a commitment to keeping this moving, growing and changing. 1 month will be more than enough time to pick bits that are useful to you and to add bits that are not.

I think this will be fun! If the box gets stuck, lets push without malice on the holder to move it along and keep the fun rolling! I think I could turn it around it a few days, but others may want to camp on it and make some decisions. So… 30 days may be ideal!

Ronin42, I think this will be a great little moving project and was a really good idea!

BTW, a current C8 project has me looking for extension tubes and they do not seem to be standard items… so I would love to look at those tubes!

Matt

That would be fun Ronin42.

I’m sure you remember the BLF geochache which was logistically a bit similar to this. There were two obstacles that may play a role in this project too:

1) the box would stay much longer at several stops than expected because not everyone immediately found the time and attention to move the box forward quickly.

2) the box stopped moving altogether when devman while he was in posession of the box, stopped responding and disappeared from BLF (I still wonder what happened to him, he was a nice guy who would not willingly undermine the project)

It’s a nice idea but there is already one problem. You have added 18650 cells. Following shipping regulations might be a challange - and apart from the growing size and weight of the box - could make shipping really expensive. Then there is customs - it could be a nightmare to get the box in case they inspect it in some countries.
Sorry for me beeing so negative. I think the people that actually bid for the box should think about the cost and problems involved for them and not just see the “free parts and get rid of unused stuff” part or the box might get stranded somewhere really fast. Stating current weight and size of the box could help people to get an idea what shipping costs they might face sending it to the next “auction winner”.

Maybe a US only project to start with and USPS medium box without batteries or USPS ground with batteries. They are economical to ship with. I could see adding a small fixed knife or other stuff that might not make it into another country…

Maybe start an EU box as well? I assume that shipping within the EU is more reasonable than from the US to the EU.

mattlward sounds like your the first to throw your hat in the ring (if I don’t misunderstand)

djozz Two good points. first hopefully in a conversation one can get an agreement to process the box in 30 days or less

Lopan The battery issue is a good point that I had not thought about I’m not even sure how long they might stay in the box, but it certainly is a good point.

And the winner is…
