MAG Charger. Can it be run on D-cell alkalines?

Can the Mag charger be run on Alkalines?

If so, how is the light output and runtime?

Is there a budget DIY alternative to the NIMH prebuilt cells?

The Magcharger uses 5 half-D cells in its pack so the voltage wouldn't work with three alkalines, besides their current delivery capabilities wouldn't be up to the job even if you could stuff 5 D cells into it.

It's worth getting a new battery pack for - IMO the magcharger is the best light Maglight make, though it is expensive.
