Dereelight DBS-5S Review

User manual:

In the box containing the Dereelight DBS-5S, in addition to the torch, there were two O-rings and the rubber button (black).

The Dereelight DBS-5S is very beautiful, and just got in touch with the perception of a quality product.
The DBS 5S is equipped with a Factory De-domed Cree XP-G2 LED. It is also sold with red led and IR 850 nm IR. It has the button in the queue and with the rotating ring, positioned before the head, you can vary the 5 levels of brightness present. The manual states that using a single lithium battery can drive the emitter at 1A ~ 1.8A, using more lithium batteries it can operate the emitter at 1.5A ~ 2.8A.

The Dereelight DBS 5S consists of four distinct parts. There are six O-rings arranged in the various threads to ensure an IPX8 water seal.

The head has a deep SMO reflector with inside the dome-free XP-G2 LED. Looking closely you can see that this operation was done at the factory. The silver anodized bezel gives the DBS 5S a nice look. Beautiful circular cooling fins on the head.

The glass lens has anti-reflection treatment.

The inscriptions on the top of the head are well-made, legible, and without smudges.

With the spotlight removed, we have access to the XP-G2 LED. There is also a rotating black ring, which is used to select the 5 levels of light that has Dereelight. The selector ring, which has five clicks, has a small dot that matches, rotating, with five grooves. For each one of them is a different light intensity. On the LED base there is a circular transparent plastic placed over the welds to avoid dangerous contact. Threads are anodised and there are two O-rings for waterproofing.

At the bottom of this form, we find the positive pole. A spring plated as a contact stands out. This allows the use of flat cells.

Down there is the central body of the torch where the 18650 battery is inserted. Classic knurled and good thicknesses.
On the body we have anodized double thread and double O-rings. There is also the cigar grip ring that can be removed.

Passing to the tailcap has a good centered plated spring. We find, in the queue, a fluorescent rubber button with a cube texture for better grip. A detachable ring allows, if used, the DBS 5S candle position. The two holes on it allow the fastening of a wrist lanyard.

User Interface (UI):

The user interface is very simple. To turn on the Dereelight DBS 5S just press the switch in the queue. This also allows Momentary On.
Once the button is pressed, the torch lights up with the brightness selected by the rotating ring.
Turning the ring counterclockwise we have the following brightness: (1% - 100% - 70% - 30% –10%). We do not have Strobo and SOS.

At home I’ve had a Dereelight NM400 aspheric for a while. Body and tailcap are interchangeable with DBS 5S. Some photos with the two torches side by side:

Beam, Runtime and Beamshot:

As expected from a torch rated at shooting, the DBS 5S spot is very pronounced and bright. Well outlined the spill that starts at a considerable distance from the feet of about two meters.

The runtime test was made at home at a distance of three meters between a luxmeter and a torch. The values were then reported to one meter. The Dereleeght DBS 5S has been set to maximum luminous output value (100). The test lasted three hours even if the torch was still on. The battery I used to test is a Samsung 30Q of 3000 mAh charged at 100 (4.2v). Certainly, a test done at a greater distance would have given more reliable values. Then the chart should be evaluated as a trend and not as absolute values. The torch for the duration of the test has remained only as lukewarm as temperature. The candles measured by me on the distance of 10 meters were 63,700 cd for a theoretical length covered by over 500 meters.

Conclusions:

I had no doubt I would have tried a good torch. The Dereelight DBS 5S is well built; tactical switch in tail with momentary on, swivel ring to change levels, spring to positive and negative and waterproof IPX8 are important qualities in this shooting torch. Potentially, in my opinion, it has further improvement margins. One feature of this model, like other flashlights in the same house, is to have the interchangeable LED module. In the manual there is a small explanation of how to do it.
Finally the price at this time of $ 39 makes it a definitely recommended purchase.

Thanks for reading the review.

Nice to see Dereelight is still in business. I have a few light from them from long time ago, but I do still like them. One of the Aspheric and it is a fun light to use.
