Nitecore TIP 2017 short review

Dear All,

You can find a full, more detailed review on my flashlight blog (with google translator).

First of all, I have to say that this is a very great light compared to its size! Unfortunately, Nitecore made a big mistake and removed the lockout feature. But you’ll see why they made mistakes.

Its packaging is a thinner carton box, with TIP and a small window in front of it.

The line of accessories is not too long: the nitecore TIP, a small and a bigger keyring, a simple “carabiner” holder and a multipurpose clip.

The control was solved by two pushbuttons. There are four lines on one button and the standby symbol on the other. Use TIP with two mode group. “Daily mode” which can be called a 30-second group. The other group is “Constant-on mode”, its name could be flashlight mode.

I’m not going to detail how to handle it, it’s quite clear, HERE is the user manual.

What is disruptive is the lack of lockout. You can only physically protect the buttons by reversing the clip.

It works, but stupidity! Who is the one who rotates the clip that hinders easy use? Or I do not put the TIP on the clip, but it will turn on. Or I’ll take it, but it’s not easy to pull up and down, I think it’s broken soon.

The micro USB charging port protects the water and dust from the clip. If you do not use the clip then the connector will not protect anything. It’s stupid again!

Let’s move on to heat production. This small keychain gives a massive light! In turbo mode the ATR activated and step down the high mode. There was no change in high mode in 15 minutes.

The TIP is screwed in two pieces. Both are metal, in my case aluminum, but there are already stainless steel and CRI versions in aluminum housing.

I feel the production quality is good. The metals sides fit, feel better than the plastic. The button pressure point is firm and well felt.

Its full length is 60.7mm, its width is 24.2mm, its maximum depth at the buttons is 13.7mm.
If you use the multipurpose clip, the length does not change, it remains 60.7mm, its maximum width is approx. 28mm and its maximum depth if the clip does not cover the buttons then approx. Increases to 18mm. Weight 23.8g without clip and 26g with clip.

Its light is crazy !!! I can not believe that this tiny keychain lamp lights up so hard. I made some photos with some flashlights. Awesome brightness!

I think this is a very cool keychain lamp. Very bright light is hidden in small size. I like this. :+1:
But I do not like the lack of lockout. The clip rotation is stupid, it can not be used properly, easily.
Still, I’m happy with it, but unfortunately I have to turn it on in my pocket several times. If I turn the clip off then I will not turn on the TIP. :zipper_mouth_face:

There are many varieties available: Nitecore TIP

Great review and I have one on the way. I think some of the thick stick on felt or plastic like they use on furniture feet, cut and put on both sides of the switches is what I am going to try for my “switch protection” when I get mine. As long as it is not too thick or thin, it should keep the switch accidental turn ons’ to a minimum.

Completely agree WestBam, the lack of lockout and waterproof/dust protection for the charger is :confounded:
I have one of these, use it almost every day! I like the clip, but it’s covering functions to prevent lockout and accidental activation…are a bit troublesome!
My opinion, as well, is that it should always start in the lowest mode! But this is a personal preference, of course

Thanks for your review and input on this :+1:

just bought my second TIP - i would have bought the acebeam uc15 if it was usb rechargeable

why would anyone want the CRI 270 lumens and not the 360 lm ?

Because the colour rendition is better with a high CRI LED.
I bought a normal TIP 2017 and put a 90+CRI Nichia 219C 3500K LED in it.
Lovely, and looks like full brightness for most of the battery charge. (not measured)

The plastic clip is ridiculous.

aah ok thank you
