New AMD CPU's the Bulldozer's

Sorry about that ...

Ok surely old news by now to most Computer fans ...

But Ive been thinking of upgrading . but after checking out the reviews , and the fact that many seem to be dancing around the poor performance of the Bulldozer CPU .

Ok , the crunch - MB issues , what to buy ? Almost all the boards I looked at have some issue or other ... That's not good

Now the other thing is , the Bulldozer looks to suck hard ...

If you look at the 6100 , New Bulldozer 6 core , the much older Phenom CPU's trash it , there simply is no contest , you would need to seriously overclock the CPU to get anything from it , so why not just buy a Phenom2 ?? [ What was the point ? ] Performance going backwards rather than forwards ? Im not sure what AMD is thinking ?

The new 8 Core series 8120 3.1ghz / 8150 3.6ghz ...

Compared to Phenom2 1100T @ 3.3ghz

Well , in a lot of benchmarks the Bulldozer (3.6ghz) just edges out the Phenom (3.3ghz) , now this might look good , but many seem to neglect that the Bulldozer is running some 300MHZ faster , and if the CPU's were clocked the same [ parity ] the Bulldozer might not actually look so good at all ...

In fact the old 6 core Phenom seems to hold its own against the newer 8 core offering rather well , and the other thing Ive noticed , is the Bulldozer does not scale well [ performance does not increase well when overclocked ] , this is shocking to say the least .

Im almost tempted to buy into the FX just to trash it , but I wont , it would be like throwing money away .

Ive been running AMD for a while now [ 10 or more years ] and there was a short glory period way back , but apparently no more ...

AMD simply seems to be having problems ...

And the excuse for the poor performance = Apparently AMD built the CPU for future applications [ software ] , but I have issue with this , because we are still running yesteryears apps , and this is the here and NOW !

Who wants a crippled CPU , that under performs , and might work well sometime in the future ...

CPU's become redundant ever faster , and two years from now ? or even a year from now , who is to say ...

So at best I would call this a poor excuse , and with all that PR they should have come up with a better story to tell .

So 2 more cores , and nothing really impressive at all , in fact after taking a very close look at this new CPU range , AMD share holders should fire the CEO and the board ...

I was expecting a meat and potatoes CPU , and AMD has delivered a Turkey Sandwich !

Apparently 3 or so months from now , AMD will be offering another CPU ...

If its another Turkey Sandwich , Im going to go eat at the Intel restaurant and sample there offerings ...

Been an avid AMD fan for years, but have backed away from the light, a bit...

Never liked AMD. Actually i never disliked their CPU's, but did very much the most offerings as far as chipsets available for them. It's intel time quite some years already... (always was for me, althrough i like now called amd GPU's).

Been an AMD fan up till the Phenom. Now, when the day comes to update, I will go Intel. The price difference is nothing like it used to be and that was the only drawing card for me. Intel has always been more stable, now it's faster too. The CPU reached it's pinnacle with multiple cores. Untill they come up with a different ground up architecture I think this is about it.

Of course I've said that before and have been proven wrong...Embarassed

long time amd fan here , but at this point intel z68 is the way to go or laptop equivalent

If I were @ AMD I would be pushing for a Phenom 3 , shrink the core from 45nm to 32nm , with the extra space , add more internal ram [ L1 L2 ]

This would help the CPU overclock better , lower Watt ratting ...

Also maybe mod the CPU from dual channel memory to quad channel / if there was enough internal space ... [ Triple channel maybe ]

The other thing would be to split the cores 2 x 3 , so the CPU would appear as two 3 core cpu's to software , there by utilizing another core for single thread computing , effectively improving performance [ since much software still only utilize a single core = 2 x 1 is better than 1 x 1 ] [ even better maybe , split it 3 x 2 ]

Wow , that would be a new CPU ... maybe faster too ... maybe a lot faster ...

I dont know why they invest so much in only one direction , even when that direction does not pan out well ... ??

Simply put and what works for me are very fast and stable chipset like z68 mentioned before, cpu of choice. I'm currently running an i5 750@3,4+ on air (older lga1156 platform) and it's been nice fast, dandy and dead silent for more than a good year already. No reason to change althrough an I7 K fragrance would be nice but i never upgraded. The last decent upgrade was an SSD which is nowadays a must have for fast/smooth computing experience. People often want 2Gb of poorly choosen gpu's and 16gigs of ram instead of focusing to true performance. Same old story as with sub 50usd pocket cameras with 16mil mpixels sensor crapability. Pretty much intel dominates the cpu and chipset market. I'm quite happy amd is still around so keeps intel in check (pricing somehow sane).

On a side note the current crisis on magnetic storage (classic HDD) sux big time.

HD prices have doubled here ...

Still thinking about SSD , too expensive for the short life span ...

Currently running a 1090T @ 4ghz with 8GB of 1600 ram [ all 6 cores ] 24/7 - 5850 for graphics , SATA3 1TB HDD ,

Short life span of SSD?!? What are you speaking of?

Proud owner of an intel 80Gb 1 generation ssd which is 2 year old on a computer that is on 24/7 (-10h a year for cleaning or changing stuff). Uptimes between reboots as high as 150 days. :)

But I dont have top end SSD money ....

Pretty much any ssd is worth it's own money perhaps not true for the bottom line offerings. Considering prices for magnetic storage went up like gold in the last years i can see them as a viable alternative utill this craze clears (estimated within 2 years, with 1st signs in march 2012). The trend is easily seen in online retailers stocks. Before the crisis SSD's were plenty and in stock, nowadays you can hardly see any in stock (apart the outrageously expensive ones).

If oyu need a hdd... if you can get a 60gb semi fast ssd for around the same price or a bit less than nowadays want for a cheezy 500Gb WD green series HDD what would you do?

Perosnally if i could live with such a relatively small disk (and i can do that easily) the choice is rather clear...

60gigs ain't alot, but it surely is enough for pretty much enything except to keep a shiteload of music and movies locally. (I have a HTPC for that and doubles as NAS.)

A good ssd does not cost much more than a couple of really decent budget XM-L's offerings.

Say:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227550 Slowish but still decent

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147133 Price/performance winner

And that was 1min googleing. :)

My financial status is much like the current world crisis. If my hdd dies, i would end up running a 1st spare junk i can dig in my office. :)

Been looking at 60GB SSD , start about $103 for SATA2

SATA3 start about $117 for 60GB , 120GB is about $190+

Plan was to just install windows + drivers on a SSD , everything else on the HD [ SATA3 1TB WD with 64MB buffer 7200rpm ]

60GB should do fine for that , but its still pricey for 60GB , I was kind of wishing the price would come down a little more , + Im very hard on HD's

If I dont update my system , I may fork out the green for the SSD drive .... Patriot PYRO Sanforce SF-2200 60GB SATA3 SSD Solid State Drive $115 [ wow I think the price dropped $2 ]

I bought a USB 1TB external for back up before the recent HDD shortage , its worth 60% more now

Patriot PYRO Sanforce SF-2200 60GB.

By personal experience the drive performs substandardly. Don't fall in the ideal scenario tech specs. IT does never quite reach the claims in ordinary jobs. It's not a bad drive, but you get more performance elsewhere at that price point (probably).

Here is a review (or two):

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/45279-patriot-pyro-120gb-ssd-review-10.html

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/patriot_pyro/13.htm < i can agree with this review althrough i have not tested it hat extensively myself.

Check the 60Gb corsair sandforce offerings if you can get a deal on. Pretty solid drives even if just used on sata2 interface which does not handle the max performance of this drive but the loss on sata2 interface ain't that great to worry about it unless youre a benchmark fanatic.

Spent a fair amount of time last night checking reviews ...

OCZ Vertex 3 looks decent ...
