Trustfire TR-J19 driver/XHP upgrade questions

I didn’t get an answer in the “No stupid questions” thread, so I’ll ask this one separately:

1) Can you DD an XHP70.2 with 3S/9V?

2) Driver recommendations for a max-effort Trustfire TR-J19 – running 3x XHP70.2 P2 1A (likely 2S/6V)?

I have a TR-J19 which can run either 32650 2S or 3S, with a really bad driver in it. It’s been collecting dust since I bought it, and I want to update it. It’s massively heavy so it can take a lot of heat.
As a side question, can anyone recommend a driver for a Trustfire TR-J20? It’s running 12x cool white XM-L2 LEDs.

Here’s a TR-J19:

Oh yeah, another question that may or may not be silly:

Can you run an XHP50.2 in series with an XM-L2 on 9 volts?

3p XHP70.2 directly driven off 3s? We’re talking about 2.35V/battery @ 60A. The battery will be killed when treated like that. So…let’s think about more sensible 30A. 2.21V. That would require huge resistance in the host. Without overheating. No, it won’t work.
If you’re into extreme modding, you may convert XHP70.2 to 3V and run them in series.
Lexel has buck drivers for CFT-90. Maybe he could tweak them to suit your needs?

Also, Nichia has 149 AM emitters.
There are some availability problems, but if you manage to source them, they seem to be perfect as they are 9V.

I meant to ask about driving 1x XHP70.2 that is rated for 6v with 9v. I assume it would die, but I don’t know for sure.

I know 3x XHP70s in parallel will work with 2S, and the 32650s can drive the amperage. I never knew XHP70.2s could be modded to 3v.

1*XHP70.2 won’t work either.

Rewiring XHP70:

Don’t do it unless you have pro skills.

If I were you I’d do 2 things:

  • Ask Lexel about the driver. It will be expensive, but you’re likely to get one made for you.
  • Seek a seller for 149AM

For a triple-LED variant you may also consider 3V Luxeon MX. Not quite XHP70.2, but better than any other 3V LED.

Good gravy - I don’t think I will be doing that to an XHP70 any time soon. I really wish CREE would have made a factory 3V version.

It’s amazing what one can do with a bit of obsession. I would not do it again.

3V XHP70.2 would be really cool for smallish lights like emisar D1S.

Geez you’re the one!
Honestly, why hasn’t CREE made a 3V version?

One DD option to consider would be one XHP70 in series with 2 parallel XML's (or other high current capable 3V emitters of your choice).
