Help with resistors for resistor mods

There are many resistor mods shown on blf, I’ve never done one, I want to try but don’t know where to begin as far as what to buy.

I know they’re SMD type, someone mentioned 1206, is that the common one for most drivers?
Are there other parameters I need to specify? Such as: regular film, thick film, wattage, wide terminal, percent, high voltage, anti-surge etc etc.

I’d appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction what/where to buy an assortment of the common ones needed for flashlight drivers.

Yes, I’d love to know more too. I’ve never thought about it actually. Does only size, % precision , and of course, resistance value matter or are there more parameters?

I do know that they are the most common though. Do you have something to reflow already?

From what I’ve learned also, the resistors are used as voltage divider, as a reference voltage for a switch mode driver to boost the voltage/current to a certain value.

I think you started from wrong side of the approach!
First you need flashlight that has suitable driver with current resistor,
then you can deal with the problem “wich resistance will give me desired current output”?

Lowering the resistance usually increases current and you have 3 options how to do this:

  1. you can take off the old resistor and put new one with lower resistance
  2. you can add another resistor on top of the original (connecting resistors in parallel will lower total resistance)
  3. you can just remove old resistor completely and connect pads with solder blob = resistance = 0 ohm (if LED can handle this).

I purchased from ebay asortment of smd resistors and I mostly combine 2 or 3 of them to get desired resistance.
But most common solution this days is solder bridge (but it depends from the battery setup and ).

Thanks for the helpful info, I have over 50 lights, so instead of “deal with it on a case by case” basis and order resistors after getting a light, I’d also like to purchase an assortment as you have :slight_smile:

Others also have these resistors on hand, I’ve seen people post they just received a light and that same day they mod the resistor. The resistors on the drivers mostly look the same, just different values. I’m just looking for information of what type and where to buy an assortment of the most common types used in basic run of the mill flashlight drivers, to keep some on hand, a direct link would be the most helpful, could you please provide a link to the ebay page?

I didn’t know bridging with a solder blob was the most common solution now days, but that does seem the easiest route. Is there a way to figure out if the led can handle bridging?

From my experience the 1206 is the more common size. I have only seen one or two drivers use a 805.

The 2512 is quite large, Twice the size of the 1206. I haven’t seen one used but with some of these newer high powered drivers I guess it’s possible. You could just order 805, 1206, and 2512.

No, R100 (which you’ve seen here) is different from 100R

you mean the values are higher than what we would use? I see R100, R150, R220 in that kit, those do sound familliar from some of the resistor mod threads I’ve read.

Only they’re 5% instead of 1%, is the tolerance too low?

The smallest is R100. If it was using a R100 then piggy backing would give you R050. Add another for R033.
For some drivers yes they might be to high, they could be already in the .05 or .025 range adding a .100 will increase the current but not by much.
You might buy some lower value resistors separately. Once you get so low you might as well just bridge it, but that will depend on the driver and if the led can stand it.

Those are all way to high in value. You need resistors with a R in front of the number.
R100 = .100 ohm
100R = 100 ohm

Oh, didn’t know thanks for the link, so R150 is .150 ohms and 150R is 150 ohms. Yeah big difference!

I wish I could find a kit that contained some of the lower values but I’m not having much luck.
I buy mine from digikey and get exactly what I need. Price decreases a little as you purchase in quanity.
Fasttech use to be the place that had a good cheap selection but their discontinued now. :confounded:

I don’t really know. The RX6810 has a current limit, I couldn’t read the chinese data sheet to find out what that was. Just figured it could stand a little more since the designers usual allow a little head room.

It is very difficult to find smd 1206 with small resistance something like R050 R030 R020 from China , any idea ?
