I ordered the smooth gray too because that one is my favorite. I have pretty much all the Emisar colors already. The smooth green on my D1 looked great too but the gray looks more serious.
Stu, the development of the D4 was a new venture, so yes some improvements were made. This is a more seasoned venture and TK has tweaked the firmware for Hank yet more so I would bet it’d be safe to go with the D4S straightaway. If I hadn’t just spent a hundred bucks on other things I’d be all over this, you can bank on that!
That is a pretty reasonable answer. I had a 50$ gift card and well, as soon as i get back home there it goes, just wish it was a little more since that magnetic tailback looked sweet. Or i could just order with a normal credit card and buy more lights with the gift one

I don’t think so.
ios v1 was developed by Tom E. but he ran out of time because of his day job.
So Toykeeper was asked to finish v1 to the specs from Emisar.
Later she added stuff to it and that became v2.
V3 has a completely different code base and uses stuff from Andúril. It is hard find a feature that’s not in it.
I am shure Hank from Emisar choosed what he want his light.
But if you want more features you can flash Andúril on all Emisar lights.
Ok ok i’m buying it.
Is the best battery choice still the shockly (?) Black wrapper 26650 30A discharge cell or are there better alternatives right now? I found 2 on gearbest for 6$ each so pretty decent..
Do you guys think it’s better if I wait out for a while to buy the d4s? Kind of like the d4 originally shipped with the v1 and only later with the v2 software?
I don’t think any more changes are planned. And it has spring-side flashing access so it can be firmware-upgraded a lot more easily than the original D4 if desired.
The stock UI is still pretty similar to earlier Emisar products, but I managed to sneak in some extras copied over from Anduril. Mainly, the additional ramping features and ramping config options. So it has both smooth and stepped ramps, and they’re configurable. It was less work and less risk to keep all that than to remove the extra features. But the blinkies are mostly still the same (ish) as RampingIOS V2.
The only potential firmware issues I’m aware of are:
Changing the aux LED mode is 7 clicks in “off” mode but 3 clicks in “lockout” mode. I offered to change it to make them both the same, but Hank didn’t think it was worthwhile. So there’s a minor UI inconsistency.
I’m not sure if the production units will remember the ramp level when changing the aux LED setting for “off” mode. There was a bug fixed for that late in the process, and I’m not sure if it was fixed in time for production. So… there’s a chance it might reset to default brightness after changing the aux LED mode. This remains unknown though. (update: production units use the fixed version)
I should probably get the code merged into the main repository now that the light has gone up for ordering. I still have only limited time though, so I’m not sure when exactly that’ll happen.
Is it safe, or rather unsafe, to say that this will get nuclear hot like the D4?
It can probably still start fires, but not as easily. There are a bunch of physical and firmware changes which make it less of a fire hazard, but you should still keep it locked while carrying it.
From the pictures the circuit board looks screwed in not glued in like the D4. Do they make a 26350 size battery? That would be cool. The ui or whatever it is called is really neat. It would take a while just to learn that.

Not a flashlight guru, but like them just the same.
Misspellers of the world UNTIE!!!
pat, the difference between those 2 cells is negligible so either one you find should do the trick. You almost assuredly couldn’t tell the difference between them with your bare eyes. The Shockli has a bit more capacity, so given that it may have an edge. Still, it’s a close call either way.
The UI updates sound nice enough I think Hank should have it implemented in the rest of the Emisar family going forward.
I haven’t really tested it much, but RampingIOS V3 already supports the same set of build targets that Anduril supports, so it should, in theory, run fine on all the other Emisar lights.
Would 4 XPL HIs or 4 XPG2s be better for running a hypothetical sustained output around 1000 lumens? Would there be any heat issues with the host and how long would the 26650 last?
I’m guessing this should run alot cooler than the D4 given that it is the same quad but far more mass for heat dissipation. I was actually hoping for a 7 emitter 26650. sigh.
I just ordered the XP-L HI 5D with magnet.
I ordered the XPL-HI 3A. Wanted the Nichia but I remembered how hot my D4 Nichia got so… Hopefully we can run these at around 1000 lumen and still be able to hold on to it indefinitely. I know that my TC20 at 1800 lumen is hard to hold onto for an extended period. But I’m pretty sure the D4S is going to be quite a bit smaller than the TC20.

I’ll have to take a closer look at the firmware changes. Is there a way to go max regulated now?

Thanks for the update!
So, to answer the original question, there are no known bugs to fix in V3, no current plans to change it and make a V4.

Like in V2, the user can still reset to the maximum fully-regulated level by loosening and tightening the tailcap. If the aux LEDs aren’t enabled, it may also be necessary to click the button once while the tailcap is loose, to drain any remaining charge in the driver.
Hmmm…
How long does Intl’s shipping usually go to europe?
I ordered like 5 Minutes ago and still haven’t received my light
I also ordered the XP-L Hi 5000K Version – I have 3 kinds of 26650 – the old golden 4Ah KingKong, 4,5Ah Basen 60A and the Liitokala 5Ah 50A
WHich one should give me the best result? I would choose the Basen, but I can’t find a review of those from HKJ

Firstly is the Shockli 5500 which is recommended by a lot of people on here a flat top head or a button top? As I want to get the correct ones and the sites I look at have both flat tops and button tops? Also the litikola battery you can purchase when buying the torch on the website is it possible to buy 2 batteries when ordering??
Toykeeper could you measure the screw distance on the MCPCB screws for Aux board design
it looks like 10mm from center counting pixels, but I am not sure maybe 4 inch
for Emisar lights you should prefer flat top batteries so the head spring has more direct contact to the batterie. And it’s not possible to ship two batteries as far as I know, because inside the light there is only enough space for one.

Nope, sorry. I’m still not back at my lab, and probably won’t be for a while. I don’t have many tools with me, and people might already have the D4S they ordered by the time I get back. That’s why I put out as much information as I could before I left.
in my experience you can order as many batteries as you like as long as there’s a flashlight in the package. otherwise here in the usa, when i order just batteries, they slap that giant hazmat sticker on the huge box for some tiny little batteries.
on another note, since there was no grainy white or superman blue, or robin’s egg, or parrot green, i went with basic black coupled with a whimsical 219c rose (didn’t know how to put an accent mark on the ‘e’)…isn’t it time we stepped up the color game?
My XHP35 HI had a perfect beam and theres no dreaded green or yellow. I cant stand green yellow tint. Maybe I won the Cree tint and beam lottery or maybe the HI version is better than the HD

ME NEW, ME LIKE BIG LIGHT.
Yes, go with the shockly.
And the price is good. I ordered three in a GB for 5,5€ a piece, with shipping they came nearly 7€
Hi I wanted to order the same Shockli battery’s which site did you use? Are the button tops or flat tops?
Thsbks
Just received a reply from Mtn Electronics.
Pre orders will come with magnetic tail cap and plain caps will be available at a later date.

Which 26650 is the best for the d4s? Shockli or litokala ?
Gray Nichia ordered…
I’ll certainly get a XPL one too…

I skipped the other Emisars, but this 26650 version is just TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!
I ordered one grey XP-L HI V2 3A 5000K… so far.

If you want you can start a group buy for GB. They seem quite supportive. You can choose flat or button top.
