I don’t even think this is sci-fi, but what I want is:
  • drone flashlight
  • auto-follow AI
  • hover above about 10 feet, or as foliage and utility lines allow
  • sustainable 3,000-10,000lm output to whichever pitch and yaw my head is pointing, 600lm to the sides and rear
  • advanced enough to recognize oncoming traffic and temporarily restrict the beam so as not to interfere with vision
  • 1 hour battery

that is entirely possible to do today

Yeah, there’s auto-follow drones, car headlights that auto-dim/change light direction/restrict light to certain directions. It’s all there.

I vaguely recall in “Ringworld” by Larry Niven, the hero had a flashlight laser. He used it to illuminate things like a flashlight, but it could also be used as a weapon. In that mode the beam was strong enough to light fires and cut opponents and metal weapons in half.

Seems like someone mentioned that on the previous page. Reminds me of Asimov’s short titled Anniversary. Three survivors of a spaceship wreck came into possession of a seemingly useless tube. It actually used force fields rather than optics to serve as either a telescope or microscope.

If you could have an almost limitless number of 100% efficient lens elements with any geometry which can also morph as desired, you’d have the ultimate zoomie.

Anyone here feel like we already have the sci-fi torches? It sure seems like that to me…

Read a story 45 or 50 years ago about a young man lost on a planetoid with a signaling laser that could be de-focused to be a flashlight. He was a young man on a planatoid with a creacher with tentacles however they were cut off by the laser device. A little fogy now.

I have found that a brief burst of maximum light from what is currently the smallest size flashlight per power makes it all ok/fine for a while, until the next time I feel the need to repeat.”
