Budget Weather Stations

Anyone have a weather station they can recommend. Mine just died on me. I would like it to be under $30. Willing to spend more if I can use it to educate my kids.

Thanks

What features do you need? 433/915mhz or wifi based? What metrics do you need it to give you? Want any internet based service (do you want the station to report to a server so you can see your weather from anywhere or just from its base station)?

Are you wanting only to buy turn-key or is an arduino / raspi project good?

$30 is hard to keep to. Are you wanting wind speed sensors, rain gauge, outside temp, and stuff like that. I have a AcuRite that has all the bells and whistles as well as a nice color display. It’s not really near your budget though. I did find this one that has quite a bit of information, comes with a wind sensor.

I was going to suggest a Raspberry Pi based solution, but then I realized the budget. 30 bucks won’t be enough for all the modules and the additional cables/connectors you may need. Plus the Pi itself if OP doesn’t have one. It would, however, be one of the best educational experiences for the kids though (you can never start early enough with basic coding).

Go to WeatherUnderground and find the person nearest you who can afford to buy a real weather station and has it linked to the interwebs. Profit.

This is more along the lines of what I was thinking about but my $30 limit is obviously way too low. Might have to rethink the budget. The prices on the Chinese sites aren’t much cheaper than the on on Amazon.

This is the one the wife got me for Xmas a few years ago. We all love it and use it daily. Its a hit for the entire house. It’s a bit expensive but has lots of nice features. Looks like you can save a few dollars by buying a open box one. I haven’t had a bunch of them just this brand throughout the years. They have always served me well.

Bingo.

I wanted to put a weather station in another country because it is soooo under reported. Minimum entry fee was 100 bucks for an AcuRite. Unfortunately, I had no one there to deal with it if there was any issues.

Locally, I have several within a two mile radius and four of them displayed on my phone/tablet.

I have the Davis Vantage Vue. Great but pricey and not as many features as The Accurite. Ambient Weather makes some really nice stations that are competitive with Both Accurite and Davis in my opinion. Do over again and I would but Ambient Weather. You can get a full featured station with net connectivity for considerably less money than the Davis. You also can expect the rain gauges to be worthless either immediately or after one pine pollen season in NC. The Raspberry or arduino is my dream but I cannot even spell KODE much less write anything.

Thanks

We have this one and I generally like it.

We paid $41 for it at the time.

So in the same vein as this thread, I have a budget weather station. Actually calling it a weather station is a bit of a stretch, as it is only a thermometer with a remote sensor. What I have discovered today is that the remote sensor is getting overwhelmed by some other remote sensor.

Any ideas how this can be avoided? I’d be interested in purchasing a new one if I was sure that the new one would not have the same problem. Present base model is AcuRite 02059M
