New European standard 5V1A plug S-100D







Official specifications:

  • Input voltage range AC100-240V. Wide voltage input, in line with global use standards.

  • Input voltage frequency: 50-60Hz.

  • Output voltage range: 5V

  • Output current range: 1A

  • Output voltage adjustment rate: 5%

  • Output ripple & noise 100mVp-p. DC ripple is small, high work efficiency, low temperature, long service life,

  • Working efficiency 80-85%. Low power consumption design, no-load power consumption is small

  • Output short circuit protection. Built-in overcurrent. Overvoltage protection

  • Working temperature 0 °C ~ +50 °C.

  • Storage temperature –20 ° C ~ +85 ° C.

  • The above specifications do not really have anything with this charger to do as my tests show

Measurements

  • Power consumption when idle is 0.14 watt

  • USB output is coded as USB charger (DCP)

  • Weight: 15.7g

  • Size: 65.3 x 34.5 x 14.5mm




The 1A rating is rather optimistic, a 0.7A rating looks more realistic.




At 120VAC it can only deliver 0.5A



I did the 1 hour test at 0.7A, the output voltage drops a bit when the charger gets warm.
The temperature photos below are taken between 30 minutes and 60 minutes into the one hour test.



M1: 48.2°C, HS1: 78.9°C
HS1 is the transformer.



M1: 43.7°C, HS1: 54.7°C



M1: 75.9°C, HS1: 78.5°C
Here HS1 is the rectifier diode.



HS1: 78.0°C



HS1: 78.9°C



This charger has a lot of spikes on the output when unloaded: 64mV rms and 1063mVpp



At 0.5A load the noise increases to 141mV rms and 921mVpp.





Tear down



It was fairly easy to break the mains pins off and pull it apart (This by itself is bad safety).



The circuit has a bridge rectifier and uses two transistors instead of a IC, there is a opto coupler from the low volt side. On the low volt site is a small rectifier diode and a zener diode in series with the opto coupler.







There is no safety capacitor, but instead a 1kV ceramic capacitor, this is also a safety risk.



The safety capacitor is not even soldered (This do not eliminate the safety risk).





There is about 1mm between mains and low volt side, there is supposed to be around 6mm!

It failed both the 2830 volt and 4242 volt test, this makes it dangerous to use anywhere in the world.



Conclusion

The power supply has lot of noise, cannot deliver rated current and is dangerous.

Stay away.
