knife lube?

I have a small EDC knife (leatherman Style CS) I carry that’s in need of lube, primarily on the scissors. Before I goop it up and regret it, what are a few good choices here?

On the joints. I’ve used the same stuff as for ALL moving jounts and blades,
from fishing reels down.
“TRIFLOW” Teflon oil in a small tube with spout,
Kitchen.Hunting, fishing blades/Scissors, Stainless and Carbon.
Cooking oil in a Small spray can. Spray and wipe with finger.
I’ve got a Martiini hunting knife here. NOT Stainless.
Around 50 yrs old, Still a shinyish Silver grey blade.

I use fishing reel lube for all my knives (metal bearings, ceramic bearings, copper/brass washers, nylon washers) I’ve tried a few oils but just some thick reel lube works best for me. lasts very long as well.

I use this on everything … especially my knife pivots … love it.
This bottle will last you 10 years.

Tri-flow or SuperLube OIL, not grease.

Agreed - if you’re not disassembling it, you can’t use grease.

Personally if I had only one oil, i’d get a food safe one. Not cooking oil, food safe lubricating oils. I’m using Super Lube now, and I hear Boker’s oil is food safe too.

I said Cooking oil on BLADES.
ANY oils will leave a taint on foods.
Doesn’t matter on working blades though.

great, thanks for the ideas!

I have some tri-flow from using on my bicycle, that worked great. :+1:

On knives that will touch food I use mineral oil. 100% good safe.

Do note our beloved super lube makes an USDA approved food safe oil too that you can usually find at restaurant suppliers, if you don’t like mineral oil.

Ballistol. multi-purpose.

I prefer non-toxic lubes on my EDC gear. On knives and multi-tools, I tend to wipe down metal surfaces with mineral oil. For pivots, detents, etc., I use Lubriplate FMO 350-AW. I originally started using it on revolvers after reading an article by Grant Cunningham. A couple years ago, I tried it on a knife pivot and I haven’t used anything else since. It’s been great.

Here is that article. While written for the gun community, a lot of this applies to the knife and gear community overall. It’s worth a read.

When the article was written, it was more difficult to find this oil in reasonable container sizes. A company called “Lubrikit” solved that problem for me.

The torsion bar in Kershaw SpeedSafe knives requires grease. The non-toxic grease used by Lubrikit is a little thin for that application. A Kershaw employee turned me on to “White Lightning Crystal Grease”. I’ve only been using it a short while but so far, it’s been great.

Nano Oil

Does anyone use Tuff-Glide? I’ve seen it recommended on knife forums.

A buddy works for an airline service hub, and he hooked me up with Moly-K. Similar to graphite, except slipperier(?). I use a syringe to dispense tiny amounts. Super black stuff, though.

“”I have some tri-flow from using on my bicycle, that worked great. Thumbs Up””

Great stuff I’ve used for yrs.

But. For chains.
Std lub will throw off. especially if you do distance work.
Buy the correct. “STICKY”chain oils It stays on.
and chains last longer. less resistance.
I’m still using up the last can of my Motorbike chain lube
I used on drive chain on Yacht anchor winch (Home made)

I have always used Militec-1 on my guns, knives, fishing gear, flashlights.
Between 100°F and 150°F heat after application causes actual bonding to the metal and results in a dry lubricious surface which does not attract/hold dust.

If I correctly remember it not food safe

I have always used Hoppes #9 or Rem Oil. NOT FOOD SAFE. Don’t drink it.

I use Ballistol.
It is approved for food processing machines.
I also use the knife for food

Frog lube. No squeaky frogs around here.
