New(ish) members and FLAMING

Please read this carefully and consider before posting.

I’ve noticed lately with the influx of members a change with the dynamics of this forum. I’m sure i’m not the only one who’s noticed. Despite what the title of this thread says I am not trying to single out, marginalize or make sects. I want this to be somewhat of an enlightenment to unaware members and serve as a reminder to older members.

BLF has a unique operating proceedure

Being that it is kind of partially ‘self moderating’. The idea is to give each individual some responsibility to act appropriately. Basically to empower all members to think before they type. What I mean by ‘self moderating’ is not giving others your opinion of what you think is appropriate but moderate ones self before posting. This might be something of a new concept for some members but the longer term members are aware of this and lately are riding that fine line of goading/arguing/antagonising someone without blatant disrespect for the rules (myself included). For those that need a reminder Rule #1 “Please don’t be rude”
There will always be ‘someone’, and people have good days and bad, I get that. It’s just how the rest of us deal with it in our response (if any). An offending post does not have to be made by a troll to be ignored. If it’s offensive and gets your hackles up, ignoring them can be your way of payback.

I’m not saying you cannot have a disagreement with someone, disagreements are perfectly fine as long as it’s a mature conversation. Just stay calm and on point. If it goes on for too long or gets too heated then it takes someone with great self control to drop the subject but that member would be respected for doing so.

Given this post came from a non moderator it highlights the point of self moderation. I do also realize the contradiction to one of my suggestions above but I’m sure sb56637 would be glad to see that we are trying to make an effort to keep his wonderful forum just that – wonderful.

BTW have a nice day Smile

People in general prefer to find a way to complain about a problem vs having patience in dealing with it directly.

BTW it’s “hackles”, “heckles” is what a rowdy drunk person does at a stand-up comedy night. Big Smile

We will have to start sending people to CRX boot camp where if you misbehave you have to use needle files and sandpaper all day

Hall monitors, trolls, dog trainers…I’m not sure which is worse. Definitely if you view any disagreement in the context of “how is he trolling me, I need to ignore him lest I am made to look stupid for being wrong, or God forbid have my mind changed,” then you probably have bigger fish to fry than figuring out how to ignore someone on the internet, i.e., fish which should be fried with the services of a professional talk therapist. Actual trolls can be quite funny. There’s a thread up right now where I missed one of the OP’s posts where he said something particularly crazy in the most nonchalant, unsuspecting way. I totally got trolled into taking him seriously and have mud on my face for it, but it’s all in good fun. I don’t hold it against him for trying to get a rise out of people and I’m not going to edit my post either. It’s like when your nephew says he just got back from the doctor and apparently he has a case of updog. You say, what’s updog and he replies not much, how about you, dawg? Imagine knowing what’s coming and giving the kid the cold shoulder instead of letting him have his little bit of fun.

We once had a “Three ‘rudes’ and you’re out!” thing here.

It worked so well that I didn’t even realize it had disappeared until just now. If things start getting inappropriate, maybe we could have that reinstated.

Things are not getting inappropriate per se , just the forum is quite sizeable for our one and only Admin/moderator. He prides this forum on not having over bearing moderation controls. To do that we all need to be on board and part of it.

I think that you should be specific in your allegations, so we know who to burn at the stake.

Otherwise, you’re just a Bolshevik Communist killing everybody you don’t agree with.

General aspersions don’t do us any favors, IMO, obviously.

Thanks for writing this down pinkpanda. Was noticing a change also and did not like it.

I do have an example if needed. The D4 muggle mode problem.

I understand that it is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, but the overdone naming and shaming is just not appropriate.

Well respected members like Toykeeper and Hank get all kinds of reactions, while they are more than available for support en sorting things out in the best way.

We wouldn’t have these great light without these people.

I was trying not to mention examples or call out particular threads or members. What’s said is said, rehashing conversations is kind of inviting the wrong response. If members could be a little more mindful in future postings then squabbles can be kept to a minimum.

I followed the thread and have noticed only one person being rude. This person got not much attention. I find self-moderation working there.

Smile, you cannot kill them all.

Imo ,
A small minority of peoples ,may have the muggle mood bug stoping their sense of humour working properly. Hey peeps , get a reflash.
No one should get the hump over a thread or post that they don’t agree with , if it’s not liked just move on or discuss it sensibly , we’re mostly grownups here just have fun & enjoy.

Ps , sb is doing a fine job , we have no need for mods here.

“I’m the BLF admin, and I approve this message, or at least the OP.”
Silly

Thanks pinkpanda3310 for posting this, you bring up some good points.

On a positive note, I did notice recently that the majority of the participants in a large thread completely ignored the provocative posts of an obvious troll. As a result, he seems to have backed off, because he wasn’t getting a reaction. That’s the way it should work.

It was never a firm rule based on “Rude” hits. Each case is different, but it usually has more to do with the number of times I’ve warned a user via PM, his/her reaction to my warnings, and his/her behavior from that point on. The Report button does continue to help me make more objective moderation decisions by taking into account how many other users also consider a user’s posts to be out of line. So sometimes a user gets more than three warnings, but others also get one or even no warnings, depending on the individual case.

I like the fact that BLF is ‘self-moderated’ and I understand that it means we must moderate our own ‘self’ for it to work best. But I think it should be okay for ‘mature’ members to help ‘moderate’ others by gently reminding of the rules. Notice, I didn’t say by arguing or by “shouting down” anybody. To me, it would be preferable to use that kind of gentle reminder as a ‘warning shot’ before using the ‘Report’ button.

I don't even know if BLF has any moderators. I know only of Mr. Admin sb.

pinkpanda, I agree with your post. Thank you for bringing this up and posting about it so sensibly. The self-moderation you mention (and some of the old-timers in general) are what make this community so unique on the internet in my eyes. Reading a troll-containing thread recently, I found myself wanting to only post about the positive things I was reading, and for the other things I used the "Report" button instead of "Reply" - a button which I've rarely even thought of using here. I like Mr. Admin's policy, and I think clicking "report" instead of "reply" really is the best way to deal with trolls or otherwise hurtful people here.

I will also say that it is admirable and impressive to see some of our community being so kind in the face of vitriol aimed directly at them. I don't know if I could be able to act as a role model in such circumstances. But I also know that the kind of things we're addressing in this thread, are the kinds of toxins that can seep in around the edges of a community until nothing good can grow anymore. In my experience, the nicest people I've ever met are also often the most sensitive. They are not likely the type to fight back against a troll, but instead the type to no longer enjoy a community with trolls and to quietly back away. The community then gains trolls, and losest its most treasured members, slowly and quietly, until one day it is unrecognizable.

So I think: If you see someone is being attacked, reach out to them. In PM or in the thread, address that person in a positive way, but don't address the attacker. For the troll, click report.

Agreed. Thank you from myself as well. I saw the trend and just decided to not get involved in those post. The only negative to this was my spending less and less times on BLF. I now think I’m up to once a week and, not really contributing anything of value. I have given away most of the lights that I had put aside for giveaways on BLF. Just couldn’t bring myself to login and do it. Knowing I would most likely miss the end of the giveaway, I didn’t even start it.

See y’all next week.

To me, the main issue for BLF, or more precisely, BLF members, is that some of us aren’t willing to make compromises and listen to advice on certain things.

One of these things is politeness, which some lack, like treating people of trolls and saying U should stop trying to help him and going as far as insulting people.

The one thing that makes my blood temperature boil for a second or two is people not willing to learn about anything and hiding behind a wall.

I try to be as considerate and as convincing as possible, but it doesn’t always work, even if I vulgarise things a lot.

TLDR: Being reasonable is the way to go.

I’m a relative newcomer here at BLF, although I’ve been around many other forums in the past. Never felt unwelcome here, actually I look back at my first few posts and chuckle how noobish I was. With that said, forums will always have noobs, trolls, veterans, and admins, it’s just a thing.

This place is awesome and the technical knowledge here is great. For those that can’t deal, my personal opinion is, grow some thicker skin. I will say that I agree, to really understand this place, you gotta put the time in to learn, which is always a good thing.

What would this thread be without BLF’s most talkative member? Big Smile

I guess it may have been noticed that I have not been here much the last few months. The reason is directly what this thread is about… I got tired of the petty bickering and name calling. Misstheolddaysbutwhatareyagonnado?

My Dad was diagnosed with Kidney cancer in Feb, after having already lost a kidney back in ‘81 to cancer. At 90, he just wanted to let things run their natural course so he was here at home under Hospice care. It wasn’t easy on any of us. My “internet skin” got thin, so I simply stayed away. Modded a few lights and helped friends all the same, but pretty much only responded in PM’s.

Dad passed away on June 23 this year. It’s taken some time but I am getting back into the swing of things and my post count sorta shows it! Lol Perspectives shift but the primary goal for all civilization remains, simply, be nice. It’s a big picture thing. Wink

As my first born used to say ( gone now over 14 years) Peace Out!

In this vein, what bugs the crap outta me is when someone asks for help, yet leaves out critical information, and instead just shoots down idea after idea after idea. Why bother wasting your time remembering, looking up, copying, then replying, if your idea is only going to get shot down?

“Where can I get XYZ?”

So you answer, no clue either in the person’s sidebar info nor in the message as to his location, and then get, “Oh, I live in Canada/Guam/Portugal/a-raft-in-the-Pacific/etc., and can’t order from there, or shipping costs are too high, etc.”.

“What light should I get?”

Same, then get one shootdown after another. “I don’t want a side-clicky.” “A twisty? Ewww.” “I don’t want a 21700.” “It only comes in black??” Warm white, cool white, moonlight’s too bright, turbo’s not bright enough, too much knurling, not enough knurling, ad nauseam.

Like, say so up front what your requirements and/or limitations might be. Is that so hard to ask, rather than keeping people going in circles trying to help?

Sometimes you just want to smack the living crap outta them. Seriously.

Being a n00b is fine, as we’ve all been there, but it’s worse when people who should know better do this. (Actually, most n00bz who want to learn will if anything be apologetic, vs those who get snotty in reply at daring to be questioned.)
