Hello everyone,
The project of a Sofirn 14500/AA light with red LED has been suspended for technical limitations (see here). After discussing some alternatives, I would like to present you a more feasible concept that Sofirn is highly interested in - a AAA keychain light using the widely known and appreciated Sofirn C01S host and driver design and a small yet powerful red LED for red light illumination.
Sofirn C01R
New SST20-DR version: Pre-Order now on sofirnlight.com for $ 9.99*:
https://sofirnlight.com/c01r-sst20-dr-660nm-deep-redre-order-p0118.html
* free shipping as of $ 59.00, otherwise $ 2.99 for shipping
Typical applications:
- Low-light usage to maintain night vision capability
- Finding keys, stargazing, astrophotography...
- Military/outdoor use (reading maps, orientate without attracting attention, no attraction of insects)
- Ambient colorful illumination (nightstand, decoration)
Specifications (as in C01S):
Emitter:
Cree XP-E2 deep/photo red (660nm)
as of 10/2020: Luminus SST20-DR deep red (660-670nm)
or Cree XP-G3 deep red (660nm) not available to order from Sofirn's suppliers
Cree XP-E2 red (625nm) confirmed but not used in actual production (deep red will be prioritized)
Actual, measured dominant/peak wavelength, courtesy by BLF member Djozz.
Whitewall shot from a sales sample with XP-E2 deep red 660nm (on High mode).
Lumens output:
yet to be assessed, monochromatic light is difficult to measure
low mode will be a sublumen mode (0.5lm)
User Interface:
- original intent: 2 modes, low - high, always start on low (like BLF edition)
- final version: 3 modes with 2 modegroups: moonlight - low - high and high - low - moonlight
[Poll closed!] please choose your desired UI by voting here: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/69811
Result of the poll (166 votes):
36% or 60 people voted for Low-High
2% or 4 people voted for High-Low
62% or 102 people voted for Moonlight - Low - High and High - Low - Moonlight
Sofirn is now introducing two mode groups with reversible mode order as desired
Body color:
- standard red as in C01S (alternative colors are not an option at this point of time)
- wine red or deep red are still yet to be discussed as an opportunity for a general new red anodization (not being pursued anymore)
- alternatives: maybe "no anodization" (silver appearance) if highly demanded (like C01S BLF edition) or new LT1 colors (e.g. dark green, desert tan, orange) (not being pursued anymore)
Voltage range: 0.9V - 1.5V
Dimensions: 71.6mm (length) x 14.5mm (head diameter)
Weight: 15 grams (without battery)
Battery options: 1x AAA 1.5V Alkaline battery or 1x AAA 1.2V NiMH rechargable battery
Price: should hopefully be in the same area as C01S with SST-20 4.000K 95CRI, i.e. around $ 9.00 - $ 11.00 if I recall correctly. Price may be a bit higher with a more sophisticated 3-mode/2-modegroup UI. Update 2020/05/24: Preorder price is $ 7.99.
Lot size: to be increased from 200pcs to 500pcs with regard to increasing demand. Update 2020/05/24: Lot size will be approx. 500 pcs.
Availability: yet to be confirmed, production will not commence before February 2020, i.e. earliest after CNY holidays.
Update: Ramp up delayed due to COVID-19 until mid of June, 2020.
Update 2: Shipping has started by July 2020.
Please express your interest below with your desired quantity. At the moment, I will count any tint to gather a general lot size.
Thanks a lot for your participation - everyone on the list below helped to make C01R come true!

Interested!!! What price would this be at? Will help to know how many for!
I assume the price will be very close to C01S if we get to buy it.
Oh dear. Interested in one depending on price sigh.
Please ask Sofirn if a deep red anodization is possible
Smile, you cannot kill them all.
Will there be an optic? The C01 is made for a 5mm led (which is its own optic) without ledboard so will not fit a SMD led just like that. Maybe Sofirn will use the C01S host with C01 driver? So what current will it be driven at?

As far as I know, they want to use the C01S flashlight but with XP-E2 red instead of SST-20. I need to wait for Sofirn's engineer to do some testing with the current.
I’d like two if there’s enough to go around.
Interested in one with red body

any differences ?
thanks.
Elzetta Bones.
I’m interested but my interest caps at twenty bucks. If it’s under fifteen bucks, I’d buy at least one. At ten bucks or less, I’d buy at least two.
Interested in two units. Deep red anodization would be nice.
Interested.
Been wanting a simple, small, just-red light.
Interested in two
Interested only, if Deep Red emitter is used (then, 2 pcs).
Interested
Thanks,
Mike
Interested in deep red. 3 pcs.
Please note that XP-G3 deep red is not confirmed, pending more evaluation on actual dome size (need to fit underneath the C01S optic), availability, beam quality and additional costs. Priority is currently given to XP-E2 red (625nm).

Interested in two.
Just discovered this wonderful addiction.
Interested.
If possible both LEDs (625, 660 nm)
