When did they change the photon freedom to a single button interface? I just picked up two on a Black Friday sale and looks like there is no more direct access to high and low. My old one i programmed your come on at the lowest setting with one switch and then the other one turns it on to max. A very nice UI for these ultra compact lights. Now just one mode with ramping adjustment after it turns on to full output.
On an aside, has anyone swapped the nichia gs for a yuji or similar high cri led in the freedom line?
As far as I know the Freedom has been basically unchanged since it launched. At most it was updated from the Nichia DS to the Nichia GS early in its life. I’ve never heard of an LRI product with multiple buttons either.
buck91, it sounds like you have the Photon Microlight 3, which was discontinued, but I don’t recall the reason. I have an orange version and prefer its 2-button interface to the 1 button on the Freedom.
Fascinating. Learn something knew every day. I’ll add that to my database. Though since it is out of production it won’t appear on the site.
edit: I can tell you why it was discontinued. That knifecenter page mentions “a very handy one minute auto shutoff” and that is why it was discontinued. Another company had a patent on that feature and LRI got in hot water. The feature was “removed” from the Freedom too. Though in reality it was hidden behind an undocumented button combination.
The Freedom’s demo mode wasn’t 1 minute. It turned off the light after 6-10 seconds and wasn’t an advertised feature for normal use. IANAL but those limitations might have made it okay.
Great info in this thread! The 1 minute auto shut off is new to me- seems like it could be beneficial for certain applications with such a small light.
Looks like your right. Definitely a nicer design with the two button interface.
