Convoy S21a with a XM-L2?

I’m hoping someone has built a S21a with a XM-L2.

I have several S2+ now, but I’m thinking about trying out the S21a Host.
I am really hoping someone has one with a XM-L2 and they also have a S2+ with a XM-L2 and are willing to provide side by side beam shots.

I’m curious how the extra few mm in width will affect the hot spot and spill.
Also wondering how much better it handles heat.

I apologize in advance if this has been ask for before.
I’ve been searching with my phone for a while now and didn’t find it.

I have the S21A with an SST40 (XM-L2 has 50mm die, too), 6500K and a MTN FET w/standard firmware w/memory and 120 sec. stepdown. It is fantastic. The only changes I would make would be a FET+1, Bistro or Crescendo FW. I find 120 seconds is almost too much but it cools down quite well. I would like to try a 5000K LH351D in it. This would make the light a little more throwy.

I don't have beam comparisons but I have had a number of S2+ w/XM-L2 lights. Look at your current light set up and increase hotspot 1.5 times with brighter spill.

I think Mtn Electronics has the host, 20mm driver and and 20mm MCPCB LEDs I've mentioned. Just looked today.

Thank you for your response.

Can you confirm if the S21a is more or less floody than the S2+ at a similar Lumen output?
I know the SST 40 is much brighter than the XM-L2.

I love Mtn, because when I order something it usually comes in 2 days.

I already have a XM-L2 on a 20mm mcpcb and a 20mm driver.

I think it'll have a tighter hotspot and larger diameter of flood. The best way to find out is try it. That host is very reasonably priced... not much more that a black S2+.

And heat dissipation should be much improved with an XM-L2 and that host.

So I’m attempting my first build with similar parts and wanted some opinions or input.

@Viainferno -

Were you planning on using that reflector with a triple MCPCB? Or were you just ordering a spare for another light? You list the Carclo optic that works with the MCPCB. You’ll need to confirm that the Optic will work with the S21A host. I thought the S21A head was a little bigger diameter, but I do not have one.

I was hoping to be able to use all the listed items for this one build yes. Looks like I have some more research to do. Any place you suggest looking?

If you buy that host, it includes a reflector that should work with most single LED. You do not need the S2 reflector for this build.

Then, you have to decide if you want 1 or 3 LEDS.

If you want three, you have the right MCPCB and Optic, but you need to make sure the optic fits.

If you want one, you need to select a different MCPCB and LED. You can read up on the Samsung LH351D, Luminus SST-20, SST-40, and CREE XM/XP choices. There are also XHP leds, but you have to be careful because some versions are 6 or 12 volts. This XHP35 at MTN is 12v, for example.

If that helps, some shots of S21A with OP ref. (may be overexposed so don’t get too excited ;))

With Luxeon V2 4000K

With XP-L HD 5700K

For the triple, keep the glass lens over the Carclo. Pill+MCPCB+optic+lens height = the same with the reflector (stock set up).

I asked Mr. McDougal about this because I may build a Triple.

@Nachtfeuerzeug

To be clear that last reply was directed at me correct? Also to further that what your telling me is that my build will work with the reflector removed from the host, correct?

Yes, Viainferno.

I must make a correction. A spacer (Cu or Al) is necessary. Richard told me the S2+ spacer will work. It, combined with the optic and lens fill the space that the reflector does. Please email him just to make sure.

Of course I read this moments after I pull the trigger on my order, >.<. Even so thank you for your help and I sent him a support email already before writing this reply.

Hopefully these beamshots may give some insight.

Flashlights are about 18 meters or 60 feet away from the wall ahead.

Flashlights used in the videos below are the Convoy S21A (SST40), Convoy S2+ (SST40), Convoy S2+ (XPL-Hi), Convoy S2+ (XM-L2)

That ship has gone and sailed. The 3x XP-L puts out an amazingly powerful light in that S21A housing the way I mentioned it above with the spacer and no Reflector as expected lots of spill and not a ton of throw. The carlco Optic helped a bit. Heat builds fast. Now my only issue is finding a new lens since my carlco Optic seemed to crack the lens. :confused: anyone who could point me in the direction of a S21A lens that would be great.
