While I understand the current inconvenience to a community like ours who relies on Chinese products, I just want to politely mention that any of us well off and blessed enough in life to be buying non essential items and participating in such a hobby/community should really take time to consider what an affected person/family in China would feel during this time. If I have to wait months for a package from China right now, I’m not going to feel sorry for myself in the least.

Some European countries are right now in transition to new import rules with added vat for the whole orders value. Since Aliexpress does not accrue vat when placing the order, there will also be added considerably extra handling fees. In this worst case scenario, it seems likely the orders will delayed so long, that the new tax regimen will be valid by then. This will for me result in $330 extra payment for all the orders. That’s the reason I cancelled all of them.

We may all be grieving about flashlights that might turn up late or never.

But … do you know that the affected region in China produces over 95% of the basic materials for antibiotics sold in the US? And that the medicine industry, like the automotive industry, is very “last minute” driven. The manufacturers of the end product avoid stockpiling, so the major part of the stocks needed to manufacture antibiotics is now in quarantine.

EU officials are urging to reverse/block the outsourcing policies of the major antibiotics companies.

One of my programmer friends commented on how he’s seeing evidence of a lot more buggy software since big US companies like Boeing outsourced their coding.
Now that’s scary.

Not just materials, finished products. More than 90% of the ibuprofen and hydrocortisone that the U.S. imports originates from China. A large percentage of acetaminophen and penicillin as well.

If China really wanted to squeeze the U.S. in the trade war, it could bring pharma into the equation. People might be able to get by without a new gadget, or a new flashlight, but they need drugs to survive.

And if the Mayo Clinic claims “Medical research indicates there are no antibacterial or virus disrupting actions in the human body due to ingesting Colloidal Silver.”, then they’re FOS. We know the exact mechanism how it works.

Who exactly is we?

Well, now, anyone here who read that bit about screwing up a virus’s method of replication.

Here’s a start…

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6264685/

Certain metals like silver, titanium dioxide, etc have anti-microbial properties. Some topical applications are mentioned. The question is what effect do they have when ingested.

It’s worth reading the paper linked above, or at least the Toxicity section:

Quote:
Although significant progress has been made to elucidate the mechanism of silver nanomaterial toxicity, a proved consensus on the immediate impact or long term effect on human health is still missing. Further research is required to provide the necessary warranties to allow a safely exploitation of the interesting in vitro antiviral properties of silver nanoparticles and their transfer to the clinical setting.

The devil is in the details.

Just because something is a disinfectant externally, doesn’t mean it would necessarily work similarly inside the body. Lots of interactions to watch out for.

Plus, the same substance can have different properties depending on many characteristics such as size, shape, impurities… and then even for chemically identical molecules: chirality! Sedative thalidomide is one famous example where one chirality was effective while the other was toxic, causing birth defects and deaths.

It’s one thing to notice an interesting material property. It’s quite another to harness that property effectively and safely in a given system.

Bottom line is it’s not so simple. Better safe than sorry. Talking to biochemists can be enlightening.

Winston (surpentza on youtube) was right. He talks about the way China counts (or doesn’t count), the number of cases. And I suspect there is many more than what they are saying now

Wow bro! You have some good info there.

Well in that case things will never be the same, prices will be higher, people will order domestic products rather than China imported ones and that will not be good for China I’m afraid…

Let’s begin with stating everybody uses other numbers, and every dead person is one too many.
I have other numbers. Seems they have changed the “definition” of a person infected by Corona.
The number of cases has risen by 14,480 and the death toll has risen by 242 people in one day.
The new definition has increased the total number of deaths with 135 persons in previous days.
So the most recent death toll is “only” 107 persons in one day. Which is also horrifying.

Searched Eu vat packages, I think this site is relevant.
https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/vat/modernising-vat-cross...

If the sites adapt and demand Vat for each orders, refunding it to the buyers country, then for my country there will be only 25 % added, no handling fees. As it will soon be now, it will also add handling fee $32 atop. Think this will result me to buy less of the cheapest brands, and switch to buy some of the premium brands instead. Ofc much less shopping and orders.

I did not catch the source but last night I heard that this has the potential to affect 60% of the world’s population. No fear mongering intended. Just saying.

What I found most disturbing in Winston's video is that there are people with active symptoms who bragged that they circumvented the Chinese quarantine control. These people made it out of China and are now in France, Australia or anywhere else without being properly checked for any infection of nCoV. So much for the phrase "we have everything under control". With an incubation period of up to 24 days and a disease progression of up to 5 weeks until death or full recovery occurs things have become out of control some weeks ago already.

Usually, when politicians say "we have everything under control", people become alerted. This phrase serves only one purpose: to prevent any panic. Now that masks/respirators are out of stock, also urgent medication like ibuprofen is subject to panic buying everywhere.

Just got a work e-mail about Covid-19 policy updates:

Here are a few excerpts:

Quote:
The University has decided that staff and students should not travel on university business to China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau … This list will be kept under review.
Quote:
There have been reports nationally of some individuals being avoided or harassed. The university has a zero tolerance approach to any reports of behaviour likely to cause harassment or intimidation. Anyone with concerns should report them to ———- … … Incidents of abuse or intimidation may also be reported to the police.
