All sorts of creatures have their own suite of coronaviruses infecting them, and every so often one jumps into a new species. Humans seem to be more vulnerable to viral infection from other mammals (naturally) and from birds. No one is sure what species 2019-nCoV came from, although all the evidence is that it started in a particular market in Wuhan, likely from direct blood transmission in some sort of butcher shop. The virus appears to cause a rapidly developing viral pneumonia in some patients, and the problem with that is that there is very little to be done. Supportive care is all there is to offer – as medical professionals continually remind the general public, antibiotics are useless against viruses. And although we have more actual antiviral agents than we used to, the selection in hand is not very useful against the coronaviruses. So what does biopharma research have to offer?

That takes us back to the open questions about the spread of the virus. For news on this and other issues, Stat has been doing a good job rounding up the reliable information, and they’re doing it in front of their paywall. Here’s one of their latest, on the shift from trying to contain the virus to dealing with the fact that it may be too late for that strategy to work.

It’s just a stupid joke.
It’s not meant to be taken seriously.
My whole family thought it was funny.
Look up the word “levity.”
It’s an important concept that helps people get through difficult times.
The word you are looking for is Gallows Humor
Still bad timing.

Look, the news about Wuhan coronavirus is pretty grim.
I was just trying to lighten the mood a little.
I admit that my sense of humor is very sick, but according to my hero Dr. Drew Pinsky, levity is very important in life, especially when things look grim.
One case confirmed in Germany ,they didn’t go to China,
They had contact with someone who had contact with someone From the town in China that it originated from .
well…..this is how this world is …..iam from Slovakia…NO CORONAVIRUS here..none…and now i read that all this masks against dust are sold out mostly….cos people are afraid….i cant believe how people stupid are…media…manipulation….nothings changed,,
One case confirmed in Germany ,they didn’t go to China,

It appears that the 3 new cases are employees of the same firm in Bavaria. Colleagues of the man who was infected by a Chinese lady who did an in-company traning there.
This virus has a lot in common with a flu virus. Almost every winter there is a flu epidemic in NL. We call it an epidemic when there are 50+ people per 100,000 infected. The flu virus mutates every year, but not that much. This means there is medicine that more or less can contain the spread and the disease itself. Worldwide the “common” flu causes some 650,000 death’s per year. And 41,400 average deaths per year in the US from 1979-2001. Different methods in 2010 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a range from a low of about 3,300 deaths to a high of 49,000 per year.
The difference of this virus is that it is new. The cures or remedies of the known flu’s don’t work. Your (my) body has to do the job on its own. And people with a fragile healt are more likely not able in doing that.
But this is not a bubonic plague or Ebola. It is more or less something that just popped out of the giant petri dish of Chinese markets. And it is handled like so many things. First you let a few insect’s escape, do a lot of nothing, ignoring and denying, and end up chasing them with the biggest cannons you have. While shouting: don’t panic, don’t panic!

You are a flashaholic if you are forced to come out of the closet, to make room for more flashlights.
Confirmed in China Post? Wtf?
Do you realise that viruses cannot survive outside the human body for more than a few minutes??
This whole hysteria is generated by the media for a reason. Just follow the money.
They are fooling you so the rich get richer on your back.
I really thought this community has smarter people than this.
There is not danger. The virus can not survive on surfaces more than hours.

That is a good analysis. For all those that want to shoot the messenger, remember that all media has a on/off switch.
Q: Am I at risk for novel coronavirus from a package or products shipping from China? There is still a lot that is unknown about the newly emerged 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and how it spreads. Two other coronaviruses have emerged previously to cause severe illness in people (MERS and SARS). 2019-nCoV is more genetically related to SARS than MERS, but both are betacoronaviruses with their origins in bats. While we don’t know for sure that this virus will behave the same way as SARS and MERS, we can use the information from both of these earlier coronaviruses to guide us. In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of 2019-nCoV associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of 2019-nCoV in the United States associated with imported goods. Information will be provided on the 2019 Novel Coronavirus website as it becomes available.
Then again, they don't know, but it's likely that the risk is low.

I purchased some things on ebay on saturday and still not shipped.
The coronavirus is the cause.
…they’re on holiday for new year, everything is closed…of course it hasn’t shipped
Worse. I’m into import a little. My Chinese colleague says they are going to extend CNY to Feb 3rd and their company told them to stay at home for another week and work from home. So he said he would be normally operating soonest on Feb 10th.

Are you having another bad day?
Actually I was until I opened up some packages that I received yesterday.
I got some very nice Bluetooth headphones that put a smile on my face.
Apparently there's nothing like receiving a new toy to improve my day, though they say laughter is the best medicine.
...
If you guys don't see the value of levity, there's no hope for you and no one can help you.
Jokes about bad situations actually help your mental health.
If you don't like the joke, that's fine.
But that joke is pretty tame compared to the ones that I usually come up with and do not share on BLF.

There is info about people called “super spreaders”. People who can spread the virus to 36 people instead of the normal 4… Any info about that?
