Hello PPtk. I just read this whole thread today and it is awesome what you are doing! What a small world! I am from N.Carolina (around Asheville) but was dragged up north when I was a child (4Years old) and live in South Eastern Mi. for 56 yr. I am South (downriver) of Detroit and believe me I shall have no problem moving back down South (N.C. mountains)in about 1-2 Years as I have yearned for that day for many years. I love MI but at about age 40 (I"m 60) my southern heritage kicked in and the yearning for home started calling me. My dad left me a 25+ acre place outside Black Mountain/Old Fort. Now, at the risk of being presumptuous, instead of sending your unit to Foy LOL (sorry Foy), for a review, I could sacrifice (for the good of BLF) and head your way (or meet in the middle for lunch *or dinner when it is dark hehe*) and see this thing in person? I did a bit of fishing in Lake St. Claire many years ago (also stayed at a Holiday Inn harhar). We could do this at your leisure. Great build/thread
i would love to have one to mount on the front of my x, but couldnt afford one. just interested as to what happened with it. remember this from when it started and someone elses post led me to dig this up
Just simply amazing, and wouldn’t you know it, I just got through installing a GoRhino charge bar on the front of our ’12 Escape!
Sure do want to see this at work, some video of a 4 wheeling adventure lit by this incredible light bar. Oh yeah!
Have to agree with several of the others, I’m not saavy on a lot (ok, most) of the talk here, but you explained in an easy to understand manner that made a lot of sense, even if it was cappuchino with Irish Cream, still went down smooth and fired me up at the same time!
Thanks for the compliments DBCstm, I really do need to get some good shots of this thing in action. Its AWESOME on back-roads and even better in back-woods. It's just so cold and miserable here in Michigan right now that I have somewhere between zero and 10-100 on the desire scale to go out and clean the jeep up, take it out to the middle of nowhere and take beam shots.
If we ever get a break in the weather, I really will try to get some "Project Complete" shots and video.

I am currently extremely busy with work. Please do not expect a response from me quickly. I will be dropping in as time permits, but the amount of time I can dedicate to responding to topics and PMs is very limited.
Stay in the Jeep and do the driving while an ususpecting volunteer stands outside in the misery and does the filming! And in horrible conditions is when it really “shines” right? Come on, after all that work and now you have issue with the weather?
Easy for me to say, Central Texas is experiencing beautiful weather!
This last shot of Mr. Pruple reminds me how deep the fins are cut.
Yeah, the fins are cut quite deep in the aluminum. I had to go deep in order to get enough surface area to dissipate the 240 watts of heat!
WOW, just found this thread amazing work. Im designing my own light bar and it seems like i might be able to squeeze out around 500 square inches for 10 leds driven at 3 amps and 2 hyperboost drivers . was wondering how much surface area you have on yours
Thought everyone might enjoy a sneak peak at what I’m working on for myself right now. The photos attached here are of the base of the ‘to-be’ enclosure. I tossed a CD in one of the pictures for size reference.
Machining this was a zero on the fun scale, but it was worth it. Came out quite nice. Should look really good once its tumbled and anodized.
Enjoy the pics

Just about the same – roughly 500 sq. Inches. At full drive, the light will not stay cool with zero airflow – it needs at least a slight breeze through the fins. 2-3 MPH is plenty though, and then it will run at reasonable temps even in very warm ambient conditions.

hate to bump up an old thread (not really, i love this thing), but what has become of this beauty?
-the- Throw calculator - Pulsars list
I would also really love to find out how the rest of the project went, and look at how much it would cost to buy a kit

I ended up sending PilotPTK a message asking about he said he did finish it and he is hoping to post some pictures this weekend if he gets the chance
Oh, yeah! This is an awesome bit of kit.
I’d really like to see some pictures of this beast. I signed up just to comment! haha.

Cool thanks, mine should work pretty good then since I will only have 100 watts to dissipate
Not to bother you, but how’s the weather up your way? Light enough for you?
(Lurking hard over this one!!)
“There is no darkness but ignorance.”
Just gotta say, you’ve spoiled us! Seeing it done so right, makes so many others look so wrong.
I know some parts of the world have bad weather, but is it really this long?
I too am looking forward to seeing this light in action.
I’ve been following this build with great interest for quite some time now. Are any of these ever going to be available for sale?
Very impressive!
You don’t need the extra internal heat transfer of a fluid?
Flashlight designers should look at lighthouses and pottery.
