Unno, might be a browser setting.
If I back out (alt-left) after I preview (but not send), refresh the page, and see it’s not there, I alt-right back to the page and the text is still there. Then just hit [send] and it’s done.
It works quite nicely, sez me.
Goggle mail sucks so much worse in that regard. Back out, and your text is gone, period.
