Replacing original spent AA rechargeable batteries - what type is a safe replacement

I have a Playstation Portable 3rd party grip unit (vec432 psp grip) that came with four rechargeable Ni Mh AA batteries labled “EPT NI_MH 1400mah 2005.8” the batteries are individual and wrapped in light green casing with black print.

The grip itself is capable of charging them and includes barrel plug labled DC IN 5.0V.

My question - what is a safe replacement for these if I want to use the grip’s charging capability?

I’ve had great experience with the black eneloops but I don’t want to create a fire hazard if these are not correct for the unit.

Plain eneloops have a longer cycle life. Any eneloops/amaloops/laddaloops would work fine.

Eneloops should be fine. You might also consider investing in a decent external charger that has “refresh” (discharge/charge) capabilities. This can prolong the life or sometimes resurrect “dead” rechargeables

The issue with your grip is likely to be, low current, and “not smart”. LSD cells do not prefer constant charge, overcharge. If the charge algorithm is ‘smart’ and terminates correctly, it’ll be fine. If not, simple provides a constant charge until unplugged, and you absolutely plan to use that, then you may be better off with a non-LSD cell.
