Survival Frog LED Solar Lantern Review

This thing is about the size of a hockey puck, then opens with an accordian plastic film to create a hanging lantern for your survival camping enjoyment and delight.

This one would only light up when the micro usb was plugged in; the charging led went to green but it wouldn’t operate on its own.

Inside i found a 14500 800mAh no-name cell with both terminals exiting the top with a couple of wire leads. It was labelled “lithium capacitor” on the wrapper and was only reading 0.9V.

It can supposedly be used for charging your phone from the USB port while you are survival camping. The circuit board looks fairly simple and would be easy to trace out except that the U1 8-pin ic has the markings etched. It uses a DW01 with 8205S pair for cell management and it was likely locked out due to LV of the cell.

so i charge the cell up to 3.4 using a bench power supply and then tried the microUSB charge port again, and the red led indicates charging mode and it is sloooowly charging the “capacitor”. Haven’t tried the solar panel but expect that to be worthless too.

It has 3 modes with a clicky switch that it cycles thru: low-hi-blink-OFF

i found numerous shill reviews on utub but no real users giving an honest review of this POS. Maybe i would change my mind if it holds a charge and actually starts working.

I think the concept, compact storage with the harmonica diffuser is rather nice. Now wait (in vain) for a manufacturer that makes it right.

The company website shows just one collapsible light, the Frog Light 2.0 so I guess this one must have been replaced. At $30 for the 2.0 version it is pretty pricey. It appears to be identical to a light sold by REI for $20, the Goal Zero Crush Light. 60 lumens isn’t much to brag about and the reviews at REI, which I would trust more, are mixed from, “love this light” to “pure garbage”.

These are quite good as it goes - mine is near identical - but not rechargeable or modes (I think). Easily lights a 4 man tent, and folds up to nothing.
I can’t see the bottom of that one, but mine has a sort of diffuser on the bottom too so it shines down as well as out.
I paid about £5 for mine. I’ll hunt it out…

Ok, here it is (didn’t take much finding lol) the kids lost the handle sadly, but a bit of bent wire suffices. Never thought about modding it…. but I am now lol!
It is not a powerhouse, lets be clear, but inside a white net lined tent in the dark of night it’s plenty bright enough, it may not suffice outside though, at least it wouldn’t light a big area. No modes on mine………yet :smiling_imp: lock down mod……
Oh, mine takes 3x aa

Looks the same as mine except for the rechargeable lithium capacitor, a solar cell on the handle end, and the modes. Maybe the 8-pin ic is a microcontroller for the modes. Wish folks wouldn’t etch off part numbers, it doesn’t stop any serious rev engr, it just pisseth us off.

It’s been charging all day now and finally up to 4.23 and still red led—supposed to turn green when charging is completed. Guess i need to either babysit or stop the charging.
