Found - AAA or AA (multiple cell if poss) flashlight for a 7 year old 2nd hand or new (UK)

So since we have been going out nature spotting, my little boy has become keen to get a ‘proper’ flashlight. He is too young by a long way to have a 18650, even protected, but ideally I’d like to get him one with a bit of throw to it. Not so worried about flood.
We have an old maglite but that drinks D cells (not led)
I was thinking a 3xaa or 3xaaa affair since I have plenty of rechargeable ones kicking around. Aiming for no more than about £20 and would prefer from the UK if I could find a 2nd hand one if any of you have one lying around gathering dust.
Would be open to buying new from abroad as a last resort, so any suggestions would be welcome, but the price is pretty well set at £20.

Really impressed with the 100 lumen AAA Mini Mag. Paid £23 off Amazon with free next day delivery.

The one in your review looks fine to me for a kid, the aa one, what version is it CD?

TN4A/TK4A/SPsomething (–11?) tomato-paste-can light, 4×AA.

Up to 1000 lemons, wondering if a dummy cell to reduce the voltage (to 3×AA) would limit output for a kiddie.

I’d use NiMH to avoid having a hateful little alkaleak take a crap inside the light.

That looks pretty good, however finding one…lol
years ago I had a c8 style ultrafire or something that had 3xaa in, but finding such a thing now seems impossible, everything is a million lumens and 18650 lol
There’s gonna be trouble if they ban these 18650’s lol
I think this may have been it - or at least it looked like this

XinTD X3 Hank at Intl Outdoor used to sell. Almost a C8 but with a bigger battery tube and AAA (might have been AA) converter. Think Convoy sold them as the X3

Good lights. Although for a child I still don’t think you can wrong with a Maglite.

I like the AAA one more than the AA one. I think the size is nicer. But obviously less lumens and throw. But still pretty good for its size. And quite good runtimes too.

The Convoy T1 on a single AA is quite nice too and child sized if you know what I mean. But maybe not as impressive looking as a Mini Mag. Plus I suspect the variable focus and candle modes might appeal to a younger person too.

My teenagers use Zanflare F2’s around the property at night. They like them. 3 modes with strobe and memory. 2xAA. They just put them on high and leave them there. Little throw with useable spill.

Discontinued sadly. Would have fitted the bill I think.

That XinTD looks ideal,if i can find one.
I am loathed to get him anything too low powered, as we go out with big boys throwers etc, and he’s not gonna be a happy bunny if it doesn’t SEEM to be like that lol. I’m ok with it being powerful (ish) as he knows not to shine in eyes etc. Hard things to find…. if all else fails I’ll get one of those maglites maybe, I have 7 days to look around before that one I pointed out ends, I offered him £20 but he straight refused it.

In that case I would go for a soda can style light, anything less will be noticeably underpowered. Something like the Sunwayman D40A or NiteCore E4A. There are quite a few similar ones. Unfortunately all of them will likely to be more than £20 though.

I prefer single cell lights

Tool AA

I encourage you to seek out one with Nichia LED

Yeah, i saw those, and a few similar, but can’t justify paying that, if I could find a 2nd hand one, ideal. :+1:

Crossed my mind jon, but I think he’d lose it and also it’s not quite powerful enough throw, or output wise for out in the fields.

I recommend attaching the lanyard, and designating a nail to hang it on when not in use.

> I am loathed to get him anything too low powered

you can put 14500 in the AA Tool :sunglasses:

Hmm convoy X3 maybe? banggood still stock it.

How about this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000292823189.html ? :stuck_out_tongue:

I just bought a Sofirn SF11

It’s for 4 x AA

Brightness is not compareable to a 18650, but i think it’s OK for a AA flashlight.

I think, i paid about 17 Euro on Aliexpress.

Yes, that’s more like it. on the consideration list for sure :+1:
Also I found this for £8.99 3xaaa……yes I can hear the laughter - but this is for a kid, dunno about throw though. LINK

Thanks, that seems nice too - another for the list though it might be a bit fat for his small hands. :+1:

Yeah, decided on this one mate, thanks :+1: - I think the zoom will fulfil the ‘as powerful as Dad’s’ even if it isn’t - the zoom will help. Just ordered it, for the price it seems the best bang for buck.
I also like the strobe is hidden, don’t want a disco whilst spotting deer lol!
