Convoy S2+ Comparison (Runtimes, Brightness, Throw) Updated with 2021 lights

I shared this over at reddit but wanted to post it here as well since I probably get more info and help from this forum.


I’ve collected a few more S2+ lights so I spent some time doing runtime tests, measuring brightness, and measuring throw. Data is from the Ceilingbounce App, calibrated with a BLF348. I was somewhat disappointed by the overall brightness and heat management of the CSLNM1.TG but the monster throw and CRI more than make up for it. My current EDC is the SST40 in 18350 form factor, it’s a great light.

I standardized the runtime graphs on output and time elapsed so comparisons should be easier than my prior attempt. If you have any questions of would like to see additional runtime or throw measurements please let me know. I’m still working on the motivation to set up for consistent beamshots. I’ve often wished there was a spreadsheet with all the pertinent data for Convoy lights, just like this, but including all the other lights as well. Great job, this must have taken some time.

Thanks for this info. I find it useful. My focus is on low power, low lumens use with my S2s. This data indicates by comparison I’m going to get considerable runtime from 7135*3 and 7135*1 drivers at 0.1% and 1% with Samsung INR18650 35E. Cheers.

Are you absolutely sure those lights use standard FET drivers? I may have mistakenly read that the LH351D one was regulated.

I thought 7135 and FET were different driver types? My set will all be 7135*x apart from one which will be a FET (the BLF A6).

I thought 7135 and FET were different driver types? My set will all be 7135*x apart from one which will be a FET (the BLF A6).

They are different, but typically fet drivers are unregulated. I have seen some that just have a max duty cycle/amp limit on them though.

How long can you run the S2+ SST40 and LH315D comfortably at 100%? I’m debating between those two and the SST20 7135*6

I have a nichia 7135*6 which I can run at 100% comfortably for 15-30min. I also have a osram s2+ which gets too hot at 100% after 5min for comparison

I don’t have any problem with either the SST40 or LH351D in my bare hands, for extended periods, I’ve probably maxed out at 20 minutes with each so far. The temperature appears to drop pretty significantly once the lights start stepping down. The Osram doesn’t do as well and I had the same issue where it is too hot to hold except the very end of the body/tailcap.

I have a cheap temperature gun so please take these as estimates. I could comfortably hold all the lights, except the Osram, at the driver/LED area at their highest temperature. The bodies of the lights never exceeded 105°f. This was with 18650 bodies/cells.

Is the osram supposed to step down? I think it does but I can’t tell with mine

Thanks for the info, I have some thinking to do about which 3 I want for a floody light

Yes it does but still puts out an fair amount of heat

I ran a 18350 runtime today when it was 25°f outside and the stepdown is much less pronounced than when run inside at 70°f, both run with a fan on the light.

Damn. I guess the LH351D is a large die floody LED. Meanwhile the CSLNM1 out-throws everything. That’s solid info, now I know what to ask for in my new C8+.

I guess thermal regulation works worse for the Osram CSLNM1 because most of the heat is generated at the LED, not directly in the driver.

Based on those graphs I might replace my SST-20 2700k and 219C 5700k 7135×4 lights with LH351D 2700k and 5700k 5A driver (for photography lighting). But how much green tint is there in the LH351D 5700k beam?

Good to see the difference between 2.8A and 5A with regards to to sustainable output, and that 2.8A doesn’t seem to be affecting the electronics too much at all.

For the 8×7135 – XPL-HI (long running, 700 steady lumens)… if you replace the XPL-Hi with a XHP50.2 (3Volt) would there be an output gain or cooler temperatures? It should be slightly brighter and more floody… correct?
