If a lithium ion battery exploded in a flashlight would it blow the light apart?

Something i have wondered for years, i figure the sides would be the strongest, the tailcap would probably survive though its the threads holding it on, the tailcap switch would blow out, the glass i expect to shatter, the reflector probably get pushed out in one piece, the driver i would expect to be destroyed and side switches as well.

Of course explosions are not common unless the battery is very abused but anyone have experience with a battery exploding/bursting into flames inside a flashlight?

Lithium batteries do carry risks of explosion.
They are not as safe as NiMH or Nicad or alkaline.

Fortunately EVs have about 1/5th the rate of lithium thermal runaway as gasoline cars do.

My Diesel has no risk of a lithium thermal runaway I think. Range is about 1200 km, refueling takes a few minutes. And it’s environment friendly as it consumes only 5.4 l/100 km, doesn’t need energy from coal or uranium.

Clearly a case of mishandling here, but it was quite the explosion:

I think you’re alluding to its potential of becoming essentially a pipe b*mb, right?

Too many variables across each brand of flash, design, etc. Some makes have inherent avenues to venting gas pressure, like for instance, a charging port. Others may be tighter than a gnat’s exit port.

So with those variables in mind it’s possible butt not probable on a scale to be concerned.

It’s like asking,…….

“Will the gas pedal of my car stick to the floor someday and I’ll kill myself?”

Answer: “Yes it’s possible. Everything’s possible. Especially mechanical possibles. Butt the likely hood of it happening to you is highly unlikely so just keep driving and don’t worry about it.”

Perspective and probability. :student:

Well, not “lithium thermal runaway” but it can runaway, and destructively so…

Though I also drive a diesel for work and am unconcerned.

Happened to a friend (the first half, he didn’t die). 90s Ford Explorer. Throttle stuck wide open on the interstate. Luckily he had the presence of mind to turn the ignition off AND then back to on so that the steering didn’t lock.

An unfortunate fluke. The probability is essentially astronomical of it happening. Not saying it never happens as that would defacto be an impossibility. :student:

i had a recall notice for my ’90s Fords related to throttle or cruise control going to WOT caused by brake fluid leak from the reservoir. Plenty of horror stories on the websticle.

He was a Smart man to kill the ignition, stomping on the brakes didn’t help some folks reported.

yes it can and it has, there are several thread with pics on cpf, iirc, in one instance, the light destroyed a balcony glass panel, and made the owner bleed. but it is very unlikely scenario, especially if you do not use crappy cells,

I would think that putting it into neutral would be preferable since steering would be unaffected and if the engine is damaged from over-revving that would be the least of my concerns.

Wouldn’t the neutral safety switch have prevented the engine from starting unless it was in park or neutral?

I believe that if something happens tocause a cell in a flashlight to “have an event” the cell will most likely catch fire rather than explode like a bomb. That would, I believe blow out, melt, the tail switch if there is one, or/and blow out, melt the reflector or optics in the front, or/and even theside switch aperature would also vent. No shrapnel flying about, but a “road flare” that could start a fire. But I believe I am more likely to be struck by lightning than to have one of my lights burn.

You beat me to it. Neutral is the better way to go. I was just ready to post essentially the same. Although I think it was rolling down the interstate already in drive, right? Besides the power steering loss issue which can be especially dicey for those without upper body strength, there’s also the braking issue. Power brakes without power assist take a LOT of effort to stop a car.

@ Bort, you need to get a refill on your non-paranoia meds ASAP.

There is one case of death caused by an Olight flashlight exploding while the poor user was holding it in his mouth, there has been quite a few documented cases in the past on CPF of catastrophic flashlight explosions, these were mostly used with CR123 in series , also some intances of loud but harmless popped tail switch rubber.

“CR123 in series” isn’t that the standard adopted by surefire? I think they have some light with 6 CR123 in series.

Have you heard about the recall on the Chevy Bolt?

It's an electric vehicle with tons of lithium ion batteries.

Apparently, the Bolts catch on fire for no reason, thus the recall.

One Bolt caught on fire, and the firefighters had to let it burn out overnight because they couldn't put the fire out.

Interesting, did not know that.

And ironically, all the other petrol vehicles carrying around 10-20 gallons if highly flammable gasoline are problem free.

So the electric vehicle caught fire with no flammable material in it .

How ironic is that.
