Hi, guys. i offer you Nitecore P20i UV review one more representative of P20i model line of modern tactical flashlights from Nitecore. The key and unique feature (i dont remember any other tactical models besides classic P20 UV to have the one) is an addtiional UV light.

The flashlight is packaged in a box usual for the middle segment of Nitecore flashlights. Shortly, package is good.

The kit includes the flashlight itself with a 4000mah 21700 battery and 2*cr123 adapter for the latter, a plastic holster, a lanyard, a charging cable, a manual and a warranty card.

there is bunch of additional accessoires if you need.

All the p20i model line works with capacious 21700. Well…this is revoluationary one and this is the proprietary one Nitecore battery, so flashlight will not support any regular one. As a user, i would definetely prefer good olde signal conducting sleeve techology.

It wasnt real problem with 1st P20i, which had good 18650 adaptor. But now u get frankly useless 2*cr123. I suppose that if you cut off plastic sides, the adaptor will again store 18650.

The design of the flashlight is sustained in the spirit common for modern Nightcore models. Externally (excluding optics) it is a complete clone of the original P20i. In short, the P20i UV looks really good.

P20i UV vs P20i X

Nitecore P20i UV is undobtly far away with being “ ultra-compact and ultra-light flashlight” . And that is great that flashlight has usual size and weight! if it was as promo pic says, such short body would be damn disadvantage for grip and such a combination of brightness and UI.

A pair of tail button (on-off) and a flush-mounted rocker switch (switching modes / instant strobe) are responsible for UI. Nitecore use it in a variety of modern models. Someone will like the decision to make a mode switch so flat, some will not. It’s a matter of taste. I have no problems with this tail button.

There is no spring inside the tail-cap, but there are three symbolically spring-loaded contact petals.

Knurling – classic diamonds and deep grippy grooves for a clip or tactical ring. The grip is reliable and comfortable, the lathe is flawless.

The middle part is slightly smaller in diameter than the tail and head, due to this, it is grippy, strong and comfortable.

The head and ribs are medium in size. Head design prevents it from rolling.

There is also a type C charging connector there at the head. The plug is very thick and reliable.

There is also a tiny charging indicator. The charging current is good – 2A.

I really like Nitecore flashlights feature to blinks off the battery voltage, it’s actually quite handy to check the rest of the runtime.

There are 3 small silicon nitride cullet balls inserted into teeth of bezel. They don’t look as impressive as the classic spikes, but the flashlight won’t tear a hole your pocket.

Glass, as usual, antireflection coated . There is IISMO reflector with SST40 at the bottom and 4 *UV LEDs around it.

Actually, that’s all in this part. The flashlight looks very thoroughbred and well built. I dislike proprietary battery and totally dislike exluding 18650 adaptor from kit.

Quite good UI with EDC and tactical modes. Might be better, but still OK as is.

How Nitecore P20i UV illuminates

30 and 250 lumens are useful modes. But i dont see any sense in making such a huge gap between 1800 lumens and 250. Definitely, the manufacturer should include some intermediate mode like 700-900 lumens here. As this is the level where brightness will fall to after thermal stepdown anyway, that`s no reason to get to it via stepdown.

Brightness is stabilized, which is good. The effect of cooling is visible. Of course runtime of 21700 battery is a way longer comparing to 18650.

The light distribution is quite versatile. It is not the best, but OK for close, range work, and there is some good throw at the same time – you definetely can rely on it within about 200m.

Of course, both brightness and throw are quite usual, according to modern standart. Here the flashlight delivers exactly what you expect from the combination of SST-40 and SMO reflector. Nevertheless, this is an undoubtly good brightness and throw, that will cover almost all your needs besides working at really long range, which require totally different flashlight anyway.

1800 lumens last about 1.5min before stepdown, that`s good runtime, which you may increase by turning it over again. There is no need to worry about overheating as stepdown is thermal, not timed one.

250lum mode will last for a very, very long time. Despite the small numbers, this is a convenient mode. Not only a walk around or indoor light, but it is quite good for outdoor use within a radius of half a hundred meters.

So, though huge gap between the mid-high may confuse you, everything is not as inconvenient as it might seem if you look only at the numbers. I was definetely sceptical, but i changed my mind after some time i used Nitecore P20i UV.

And the most interesting part. UV mode.

As with the mid-high gap, my initial impressions were much worse than the final ones. As a result, the publication of Nitecore P20i review had to be delayed in order to come to a final conclusion at this point.



a) the very fact that flashlight has UV light.

b) UV LEDs are really bright, they give visible light at a distance of about 5-7m.

c) a wavelength of 365nm.

In fact, there is only one CON here, but a serious one:

The primary light from the central LED is mixed with UV light. The manufacturer claims that this is secondary emission. Is that so, or SST40 simply also receives some electricity when UV mode is on – it doesn’t matter.

Result is sort of classic firefly mode with UV addition. This is very convenient for various ordinary needs and is clearly inconvenient when working with the UV mode on surfaces that are uniform in color.

The 365nm LED is supposed to light up a bunch of interesting things. But this combined light greatly reduces the contrast. Some things are simply not visible in some situations, for example, stains from grease and cleaning agents on the kitchen tiles.

Nevertheless, the flashlight perfectly illuminates all sorts of contrasting, especially acidic colors, it allows you to determine a counterfeit banknote. If what you are shining on shines well in UV (white paper, for exampe), you will expose it right from afar. If the contrast is weak, you will have to look closely.

As a result, the potential of the mode is limited by primary light here. Nevertheless, UV mode here is not sort of a decorative one. it is working, but with limitations on low contrast surfaces.

As usual, there is what I like and what I dont like.

I like that the manufacturer releases different lights for different needs within P20i model line, expanding it really far, there is always something to choose from.

I`m happy with the very fact of switching to 21700, it significantly increased runtime. But I just can’t welcome the binding to an expensive prorpietary battery. Moreover, is it really a user-unfriendly decision to remove really useful 18650 adapter from kit. I dont see any need in 2 * CR123 adaptoer. I admit that you can cut off plastic sides of it, so adapter can fit 18650.

I like flashlight design, fast 2A charging, relatively good (for a tactical model) UI with EDC and tactical modes, i like good maximum brightness and the light itself – it is really universal.

In terms of the main light, I can only complain about giant gap between 250 and 1800 lumens. And even here, these 250 lumens mode turn out to be a very versatile one.

The light is quite decent in everything ( besides cold color temperature – my usual complain): in maximum brightness, in runtime, in light distibution. That is quite good light by standarts of a modern tactical flashlight.

Alas, though UV mode will certainly help in a number of situations, but it seems to me more of an addition than a full-fledged working UV light, which is so effectively highlights all the sorts of evidences in criminal movies. I am sure that the Nitecore P20i UV would be capable of this, if primary light did not mix with UV. I think that, taking this into account, the main functionality of UV mode of Nitecore P20i uv will be checking documents and money for originality and searching for leaks of any fluids glowing in UV.

The flashlight copes with this with a bang. But it will take a separate UV flashlight to expose more stuff in UV light. Nitecore, by the way, released an extremely compact UV flashlight – Nitecore TIKI UV.

However,i should note that due to such a combined light you get sort of useful good firefly mode in Nitecore P20i.

Well…with a relatively small price gap between the regular Nitecore P20i and its ultraviolet version, the purchase of P20i UV can be quite justified even in a situation where you don’t really need a UV mode. You will not overpay so much, but when the need arises – but you will have UV. Well, then everything is determined by whether you are satisfied with the price / functionality ratio of Nitecore P20i UV or not. And I hope my review of the Nitecore P20i UV helped you to define your opinion.
