Need help with parts

I want to build a triple with Nichia 219Bs, I can find the LEDs on aliex but can’t find a 16mm triple mcpcb for them. Klaidomain only seems to have 20mm versions, where can I get these?

You’ll need a 20mm mcpcb if I remember correctly from my builds without looking back. The mcpcb of a triple sits on the spacer on pill, not within the pill like a single.

Here are some pics of a spacer that will hopefully help:

I’d rather use my flashlight around the house than turn on the lights.

My plan so far for my first modding adventure is:

1. Get a new S2+ with the SST40 emitter, because that will come with a 12-mode 5A driver already soldered to the pill
2. Put 3x Nichia 219Bs on an mcpcb
3. Swap the SST40 emitter board with the triple Nichia one

It looks like this triple here: http://kaidomain.com/KDLITKER-3TI-Triple-DTP-Copper-MCPCB-for-Cree-XP-Series-or-Nichia-219-Series-or-3535-LEDs-Individual-2pcs

has an option to get a lens with it, so might as well do that unless there’s something else that’s better?

Just not sure about the spacer, where to get it, what size it should be etc. Would be grateful for some tips.

First off the wires on the driver will be too short —- so you’ll have to remove the driver any way —- there use to be a guy selling all the different spacers and pills here on BLF

Spacer is the hardest part to get, but there is choices.

Kiriba-ru has restocked those just while ago:

This shop also sells them:

They also have aluminum version.

What’s your overall goal with this project? Is it even worth the money when for a small amount more you can get an FW3A or FW4A with a discount code, and just reflow the factory MCPCB with 219B’s, or just get an Emisar D4V2 with the 219B’s? This was the cost breakdown that I came too,
$17.14 Convoy S2+ sst40 in black
$7.24 three bare 219B’s from Convoy
$3.04 triple 20mm MCPCB from Kaidomain
$1.20 silicone wire from Kaidomain
$12 for copper spacer from kiriba-ru, $4 spacer + $8 shipping
$3 optic
$43.62 total

FW3A or FW4A with a discount code $40, $7.34 for 3 or $8.38 for 4 bare 219B’s from Convoy, a total of $47.34 for an FW3A with reflowed 219B’s or $48.38 for an FW4A with reflowed 219B’s. An Emisar D4V2 with 219B’s is $50 shipped.

For me the tinkering is funniest part of the hobby. It is also much nicer to use something you built yourself.

Exactly that. I already have one of these built by someone on here (merlot), however I’d like another one in a different colour and with the newer-style square threads so I want to learn to build them myself. Not really bothered about cost. They’ll make pretty cool birthday and xmas gifts too.

Building triple S2 is like must if you are into flashlights. There is no way around it.

Is a quad possible in an S2+ or are you just creating too much heat at that point?

I don’t think you can find a quad optic that will fit an S2. Maybe make a quad mule?

also is there any reason not to just get this: http://kaidomain.com/Triple-Nichia-219BT-LED-Emitter-with-KDLITKER-20mm-x-1_5mm-DTP-Copper-MCPCB-Parallel-w-optics and then now have to reflow emitters onto a mcpcb?

As far as I can tell 219BT and 219B are the same chips

Also the Nichia website only lists the 219bt-v1 part, there’s nothing for 219b. I think it’s the same chip and the T is just not always used

Ah thanks for that, will buy the LEDs from Simon then.

Can anyone recommend good types of solder paste and flux that are available in the uk?

This may be a dumb question, and if so I apologize; but what do you do with “25 Triple/Quads”?
Why have so many?

Please excuse my obvious ignorance, but I am trying to learn. What is a “quad mule”?

A “mule” is any light that does not have a reflector nor an optic for the led’s. Pure floodlight.

an example.

Well, you said it. Far from me to argue.

Thank you for a straight forward answer that is easily understood.
Much of this terminology is beyond my understanding until explained.

If I might ask, what brand lights are those in your picture?? I like the look of them.
