18 LED headlamp

A friend of mine left a couple of these with me to see if I could get them to emit light. I have no idea where he got them from.

After a bit of fiddling and some thinking I got them to emit light. But it was hardly worth the effort.

With 4 LEDs lit it gives me about 58 lux at 1 metre, with 8 about 100 and with all 18 about 220 lux.

Lightbox says 34, 57 and 102 lux or 6, 10 and 18 lumens. Actually those numbers are a bit on the low side as here is quite a lot of useless spill at the sides - like a beam angle of over 200 degrees.

It has a surprisingly pronounced hotspot and only useless spill off to the sides. I can't get my camera to capture it.

But that output pales into insignificance compared to the horror that is its electrics. I'll need to tear the thing apart to get decent pics and I'll also need some daylight.

Avoid this one folks.

Here's the beam on high. About 60cm (2') from the ceiling.

The business end

It has a reasonable range of swivel.

The battery carrier part way out. The silver bit is the contact with the LED board. The carrier is also part of the structure. It also makes it impossible to check current draw.

The battery carrier fully removed. There is a groove on the back of it that lines up with a ridge moulded into the body. Those silver bits are the contact with the LED board.

Inside the body tube. There is a beefy spring at the far end. That silver bump at about one o'clock is one of the contacts.

The other side of the body tube.

Thanks for the warning Don.

Looked tempting for that price, thanks for warning!

Definitely one that isn't worth anything. Pics now added.

what kinds of the bulb type?

I like the light with durable aluminum material

18 nasty 5mm LEDs and a cheap plastic case. What's to like?

HI Don,

what is your feeling about 15 led bulb light with a plastic case.

Is it durable?

Depends how robust it is - some are good, some aren't. I'd need to see it to say.
