how does an LED change CCT?

Have not been keeping up with LED technology. The flashlights I have and am interested in have different LEDs with different CCT. I prefer warm or neutral light except perhaps in a thrower. I realize that the BLF Lt1 can change CCT but assumed that was with different LEDs? Always thought the bin of an LED determined its CCT and that was part of the manufacturing process. Just put up an under cabinet LED light tonight and it has a button to change the CCT from warm to cool like a ramping dimmer. Don’t see how this could be switching between different LEDs but I suppose it could be possible. How do these variable CCT lights work?

If you take multiple LEDs with different color temperatures, put them close together or use a diffuser of some sort, and then vary the brightness between them, the apparent affect is a range of color temperatures.

For the LT1, it has a set of both warm white and cool white LEDs. If they’re each at half power, the output appears to be the average of the two color temperatures. If you give the cool emitters more power and the warm less, you get something cooler. All the way to either end with one set fully on and the fully other off.
