Political yard signs

We just had an election and now I have a yard sign to deal with. Took a look at it and and observed that these things are kind of a cool engineering accomplishment. Don’t know if this is local or something that is common around the world. It’s like a sandwich with molded I beams. Very light and very strong for what it is.

Does anyone know what kind of plastic they are made of and what kind of adhesive could be used to join pieces together?

Anyone else notice that this could be a really useful material to re-purpose? Anyone make something useful from them?

All my yard signs for the past several years have been made of corrugated plastic Is that what you’re referring to? You can buy sheets at the bigger hardware stores (Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.).

Signs like this make good target stands for a little while.

It’s a “corrugated plastic sheet” search for this term, similar to cardboard construction, made of PVC and can be joined using a thermal spot weld, or with PVC glue such as used with plumbing pipes, OR if made of PP then it would have to be thermally welded.

i have gathered signs and the metal stands before to re-purpose. Made hundreds of S-hooks out of the metal wire—an infinitely useful device for hanging tools, etc.

Yes, that is exactly what I am referring to. Thanks for the link. Cool to see that people are doing what I was thinking about. (Model airplanes and containers.) Did not even occur to me to re-purpose the wire. Thanks for the tip!

“Anyone else notice that this could be a really useful material to re-purpose?”. Depending on your political bent, target practice.

I think it’s called correx in some places, yes it’s a great engineering material.

I remember seeing a webpage somewhere showing a DIY air to air heat exchanger with a stack of them alternating 90 degrees to one another… Thought I bookmarked it as I was going to try it myself one day to extract solder fumes while recovering some of the room heat… Can’t find it now :person_facepalming:

Edit to add: I googled political yard sign, christ, what a waste of plastic :frowning:

Repurposed choroplast? Heck yes. If you live in the desert southwest, lawns are discouraged so as to conserve water. Rock landscapes are common. I have a bunch of Halloween and Christmas blow mold decorations that would blow over in the wind unless anchored to the ground. That is impossible because it ruins the landscape fabric beneath the stones. If you attach a section of an old political sign to the base of the decoration and then rake stones over the plastic sign it anchors them quite well. I did the same with lighted Halloween pumpkins that are so lightweight they tend to fall over in the slightest breeze.

In my area county ordinance requires political signs to be gone within 10 days of the election and then the county has the right to removes them. They are fair game if left up for weeks as some politicians (especially the losers) do.

these signs really get our burn barrel going good.
the wire frames can “stake” young tomato plants.

Glue a sheet of colored paper on it and make a nice Garage sale sign
