Noob here. How is USB-C charging involved with parasitic drain? And what does Sofirn do that makes their lights so bad in this regard?

Noob here. How is USB-C charging involved with parasitic drain? And what does Sofirn do that makes their lights so bad in this regard?

He just tore down a light (or maybe two) with USB-C charging made by Sofirn that happened to have really high parasitic drain. It’s not inherent to USB-C, since Noctigon K1’s charging circuit has parasitic drain so low that my multimeter can barely even pick it up.

Oh boy... Ill vote NO to internal charging, just to avoid that potential problem. Could be small or could make the light not worth buying.. Not worth the trade off, to have IC.. no thanks.

Yea, the Wurkkos TS21 is about the worse I've ever seen, ever, for parasitic drain from the switch LED, and it's high in general. The Astrolux EC06 made by Sofirn is also terrible. Also the SC31 Pro and Q8 Pro also have high drain from the switch LED - all this shouldn't be, it's avoidable.

One basic physical principle, the air must meet the least possible resistance on the greatest possible contact surface.
So heat sink “classical”, no other way.

All off comment who say “he give lot of power so it’s normal quickly heat and drop output with low sustain output, it is a so little light…” are unfortunately unrelated to the heat exchange capacity of the lamp in its environment..

Only way to determinate a “exchange calorie efficiency” it’s measure air flow and its temperature.

All of the test made on static environement can show only the potential calorie “store” inside the host and in no case is exchange calorie capacity.
To pass a kilo of steel from 10 to 20 degrees it is necessary that X calorie is “absorbed” by the steel.

In the case of flashlight, the heat “calorie” is generate by LED (and all of circuit) transmitted to the host by thermal past, and (in dream) transmitted by host to the air by heat sink.
It’s a heat transfer story; LED to host by thermal past and in second time host to air by heat sink.

So when after a rewiew on a light only the first part of the heat story is reflected, the heat “store/tank” capability of the host by (approx) is weight and only is weight.

So if the conclusion is “the light is small and it is normal she don’t have good sustain output for this power” is not reality and/or fatality.

You can considerate no heat think because this design violate the basic rule of fluid dynamics “the air must meet the least possible resistance”

But for me , explain previously on this thread.
What this design reminds me is a “brain f**k” (sorry i don’t have other word for that, it’s, for me, the only finality to this design) for everyone who test light on close ambiant with no pertubate air flow (so approx 99.9% of rewiewer). will be able to find excellent results, but that will collapse, see will be worse, when you use it outside (a very disturbed environment).
She is only made for “lure” rewiewer in their classical test.

I am convinced that everyone here that this is an exceptional light because unfortunately the lamps are only tested on their “tank” capacity (head+battery carrier and cell) possibly increase by a possible physical effect on static environment, and have plenty of message to tell us these performances are normal because this lamp is small and generates a lot of heat Sad

I would like to emphasize that in this lamp an extra manufacturing is brought to the host for made “the opposite” of heat sink and that it would have been wiser to invest it to create a real heat sink… Crown
After if it satisfies everyone Smile
But if you want “perform” which combines the two steps of heat story I don’t think it’s a good light.

The TS21 is only radically high with the switch LED on high and must be the newer batch with the amber LED. 

For the EC06 I measured 2500 µA with switch LED on high, and 120 µA with it OFF. Even 120 µA is high - this number should be 20-40 µA. If it's greater than 40 µA, there's some other source of leakage in the circuit and I'm only seeing this extra leakage in USB-C charging circuit designs, not that they all leak, but many of the new SOFIRN ones are.

With the switch LED on high at 2500 µA drain, it would take 200 days (12000/2.5 = 4800)) to drain fully charged cells.

With the switch LED OFF at 120 µA drain, it would take 11.5 years to drain fully charged cells (12000/0.120 = 100000 hours), but for one cell it's 3.8 years, and if the cell is already drained to 25% capacity, it's less than one year. So this doesn't sound like much drain, but it's still 3-4 times more than it should or could be, and there may be a simple fix for this. There's no reason for the charging circuit to be running anything that takes power.
