What’s a good quality cheaper-end headlight for occasional use? I don’t really want to spend a lot, but was recently commissioned at short notice by Wife Incorporated to construct a large monkey-bars structure in the garden after dark, and inevitably ended up dropping my handheld flashlight.

I don’t need a lot of Lumens just enough to see what’s in front of me. Torn between built-in rechargeable, AAs or 18650 power. AAs are convenient and don’t need to worry about maintaining them, would just need to remember not to leave them in it so they don’t inevitably spew their guts over the terminals.

Suggestions welcome, the cheaper end Nitecore NU series look ok, what else should I consider?

Any headlight will work. For that type of task you don’t want a defined hotspot. As you’re looking around for the next structure piece or tool or fastener, a hotspot forces you to turn your head and point that hotspot to scan for everything. A wide floody pattern lets your eyes roam around in your normal field of vision as you would in daylight. It also lets you see the ground in front of you so you’re not tripping over things. While they are not cheap any of the Armytek headlights work well. Get a good 18650 and be done.

I bought my friend this one a while back.

Sofirn D25L High-CRI

They really like it and use it all the time.

I second this. A few bucks cheaper at Sofirnlight.com
