LIGO will not handle a mega black hole merger.

We have found two central black holes that we think will merge in 10000 years. I think there is a good chance we will detect one of these events. LIGO will not be able to handle a signal that is 1000000 times greater than what it has detected so far. The laser in that thing is powerful enough to take your head off. They bounce it between mirrors and measure where the spot is. Too big a deflection and it will burn through the housing. So of course it will shut down to prevent this. What we need is less sensitive detectors immune to false signals that can alert other telescopes to point in that direction to detect the electromagnetic signals. By the way once it is decommissioned I plan on turning their laser into a flashlight.

Maybe they could de-tune it by reducing the number of reflections.

Aligning an interferometer can be a hassle, every little thing affects the beam: temperature, barometric pressure, humidity.

“You’ll shoot your eye out”

Nahh,
Just make it a BLF deal and someone will mod it….

I’m sure in 10,000 years time, we humans if we are still around will make an instrument to observe this. I am also certain that said instrument will not be LIGO.

10ky? Either the cockaroaches will have long taken over the planet, or hyu-mons will be out there in person watching it happen.

Which one are you betting on - roaches or hyu-mons? My money is on the roaches.

Same.

Team Roaches FTW!
