Not elegant but possibly an effective way to gorilla mod a buck/linear driver to allow up to 30v input. There are a plethora of 1584 buck ic converters with up to 5A output and some with 3A in 22X17mm form factors. In the 12-20v input range they are ~85-90% efficient in the 1-3A range. Anyone interested?
