The 3 flashlights you really need and use

1 Keychain : noname S11, I use it a lot, very cheap, powerful and practical, the side lights are just a gadget, except for the blinking red.
2 EDC : Sofirn SP40A with 2700k LH351, beautiful tint and CRI, the TIR optic give a nice beam and the light is very small, even more with 18350 battery tube.
3 Thrower : Convoy C8+ with XPL-HI 3000k and plug-in diffuser (frosted glass), powerful throw with warm white and the diffuser makes it usable for close work with a beautiful smooth beam.

bonus : searchlight : Wurkkos DL70, big and powerful with long runtime and simple UI. Might switch for a Convoy L2 with 3000k LED.

Too many. Problem is that there’s a lot of overlap.

EDC, though, is hands-down my MH20. Compact af, built-in charging, love the 2-stage switch, simple and intuitive UI.

Thrower? Big vs small, anything from my GTmicro through P30, Catapult Mini, IF22A, you name it.

Then you got AA lights, AAA lights, keychain/necklace/lanyard lights, zipper-pulls, flooders (aspherics, diffused, etc.), and so on.

Yeah, no. Too many to pick from.

I’ll go with your catagories on this one.

Keychain? Don’t have a keychain light. Don’t like them getting scratched up, nor having lots of stuff on my keychain. Car key, lanyard and a decorative keyring is my limit. Oh and my Leatherman Micra, nearly forgot that.

EDC: Well this changes a lot. If I had to pick though, I’d pick my blue FW3A with 5000K XP-L HI’s, carclo 10507, sky blue turbo glow gasket, deep carry clip, SS bezel and Lume1 driver. Boy what a light.

Thrower: Well I only have 2 dedicated throwers: An original XHP35 HI 4000K BLF GT, and a modded SFT-40 Astrolux FT03, soooo I’d probably pick the FT03 simply for convenience. The BLF GT is a MONSTER but so god damn heavy!

Searchlight: Convoy L6 GT-FC40 ALL DAY LONG. I’m in love with my L6, I swear. If I had to pick just two lights to last till the end of time, my blue FW3A and my L6 would make the pick. I’ve had comments from “normies” about how impressive the L6 is, when I was helping to search for a lost pet (it was found). I just wish it had a battery check mode, although it has LVP so that’s okay.

I have many lights that I could choose, and would definitely miss, but I think I could live with those 3. Doesn’t say anything about emitter swaps though

  1. EDC - Astrolux EA01 - SST-40 - inside and up to 50 yards outside. EDIT - forgot to say uses 18350 battery and short tube.
  2. Thrower - Astrolux FT03S - copper with SBT90.2 -anything from 20 yards to 200 yards outside of course.
  3. Headlight - Sofirn D25S - whenever I need my hands free to do other work both inside and outside.

Those are my "go to" lights useless I have a specific reason for using something different. If that is a case it could be any of about 20 others.

1. EDC compact 21700 thrower: Convoy S16 with SFT40 (I use this all the time)

2. Headlight: Lumintop HL3A (Very handy, but it doesn't get used much)

3. Keychain: RovyVon Aurora A3 (I rarely use this one, but it's a nice light to have as a backup)

Bonus EDC compact 21700 flooder: Acebeam E70-AL (my old EDC, so I no longer use it, but it's my nicest light)

EDC - Olight S1R

Walking the dog - Olight R50

Searchig the dog - TrustFire T90R

Running the Unheard - Armytek Wizard Pro v3

Keychain - Olight i3E

I hesitate between a Convoy L2 with 3000k XHP 50.2 or L6 with GT-FC40 and 2000k. The L2 is more like a giant C8 and the L6 is larger with more flood and light plus beautiful tint and CRI. I should go with the L6 and to try that pleasant very warm tint at night-walks.

Keychain = I3E eos (shrink-tube treatment)
EDC = Malkoff MDC HA (work)
Thrower = Convoy M21A CSLPM1.TG 6A

Honorable mention “searchlight” would go to my L21B SFT-40.

EDC is an FW3A; in my pocket at all times

Headlight is one of a couple of older Sofirn D10(?) that have 4000K LH351D emitters. Single emitter central type.

My third is a wood light running a 14500 li-ion cell, a Sofirn SP10a driver and a triple de-domed 4000K LH351D and a wide Carclo. That gets used at night inside the house. A rectangular box so it doesn’t roll off the table and glulam wood so it looks nice.

Those 3 get the most use.

Are keychain lights redundant now that cell phone lights are widespread?

EAGTAC D25 AAA UV
Mainly for inspection at work, but also useful for looking for small dropped objects at home.

Noctigon KR4 Quinta
Three versions for daily EDC: work, days off, and dress.

Noctigon KR1
Thrower for when needed: see the food delivery person back to car, look for cat who snuck out while getting food delivery, play with in misty rain or fog.

Convoy M21B GT-FC40

Great all around light with good regulation.

Fireflies Pl47 SST-20 4000k G1

Good headlamp, top color rendition, UI and general usability.

Modded BLF GT Mini

Nice thrower.

Not for me at least.

I would rather use a keychain light than my cell phone, and when I'm at home I usually don't have my cell on me.

EDC for me usually a lumintop fwaa 3000k and for keychain i have a sofirn c01s red aaa light.

FW3A
AAA lumintop tool
BLF A6 distant 3rd [with 18350]

Keeping it simple among the vast choices……

1. AAA with twist activation
2. Convoy S2 Custom Triple gifted me by a friend
3. Convoy C8+

3 1/2. Sofirn headlamp

Image showing my three from my post #9 above.

(in part I’m posting the image for the practise. I’m working off my phone instead of my PC as we are not home where the LC is and the img apps work a ittle differently)

You need a keychain light to find your phone.
You need a phone light to find your keys.

I have a mini Swiss Army knife, with a light, on my keychain for a quick look. Battery life and lumens are pretty low though.

EDC: The Olight Brass S mini stays in my jeans watch pocket - always.
Dog walking: Nitecore SRT7GT. Police mode for scaring bad drivers.
Headlamp: Acebeam H40

THREE ISN’T ENOUGH.

Keychain i3e
EDC Wurkkos FC11
Thrower Nitecore P30

I need 4.
EDC Nitecore TUBE. The perfect pocket light size.

SuperTiger Pure Flood Headlamp. The best flood HL pattern I’ve ever seen. Used mostly inside in daylight to see what the heck is going on when doing any kind of fix-it work. And naturally they aren’t available any more. But I bough 4 of them ’cause I never want to be without one.

Convoy S21A. Best size/performance for me. It’s what I grab for look’en at and for stuff around the house.
But the Olight Balder weapon light/laser is darned handy thing to have and never (I hope) need to use.

And the nasty blue Olight Baton (something or other) Bedside. Why? Two clicks into a 2 min. auto turn off at whatever brightness I choose.

All the Best,
Jeff
