Given that there is a small gap between the dies, I can not think of a reason why there will not be a visible donut hole in the hotspot when used well focused in a smooth reflector, like we do in flashlights. It may be limited but it will be there, and an OP reflector may be needed to smooth it out.
The manufacturer may not realise that that is how a led is often used in a flashlight, as opposed to general lighting/car uses.
+1 and IMO it’s necessary to test this before making any large order. If fogofwar can test a sample that would be great.
Well, as for why I trust them and do not worry, similar LEDs like the XHP70/XHP50 had this problem being domed LEDs with gapped dies, but when being dedomed, the problem went away.

But yeah, that would be our best shot.
Luxeon MZ on the other hand has a hole with reflectors.
I updated the spreadsheet with all of the new demands.
And yeah, I’m currently in talks with the manufacturer to check if he could send their current CNW/CW samples(5700-6500k) to fogofwar to see if the donut hole problem is a big thing or not.
In the meantime, I’m still looking for a similar LED as an alternative with a single die
It might be domeless, but we want optimal beam quality
Don’t worry: I haven’t found another manufacturer capable of making such an LED yet with a better emitter setup, so everything is good.
It’s our “only” current option unless someone at Nichia/Luminus/Cree/Getian decides to actually make something like this
In for 10.
Thx

B35A too.
Wait, the B35AM has holes?
Isn’t it a singular large die with multiple small emitters all under the phosphor?
If so, that is interesting.

It has 4 E21 dies
Yeah, but it’s all under a single phosphor.
Weird if it causes issues.

Courtesy of Clemence.
It works nice in my S21A with OP reflector.
Oh, there are actual gaps between the emitters.
I did not know that.
Well, I’m currently in talks with fogofwar so he can get samples

Yeah OP is fine, it only produces a darker spot with SMO reflectors and some clear TIR optics.
Can probably just adjust the reflector height a little until the spot goes away.

Donut hole is only a problem in small SMO reflectors.
I’ve been using XHP50 gen1 which is exactly the same layout like this emitter and in OP reflectors it’s not a problem (even in some tiny ones).
Few specific models (super throwers) had visible donut hole.
Long story short, yes there will be a donut in some setups.
I still need it…

I’m in for 4, so long as an actual test shows no donut hole.
I already said it on Reddit - but please put me in for 20, blueswordm.
thank you!
and the closer to 4000k the better for me (4000k is my perfect cct). 4500k is exciting too, though.

I prefer 4000k for general purpose flashlight. 2700k or lower for bedtime use.
