Brinyte E18 Pheme Review :: Tim McMahon

Good stuff Tim!

And thanks a lot for the review.

Thanks Marco :+1:

Good to see Brinyte is still alive.

From the review:

Ok, so what in actual fact does this mean? Is the grip good or bad compared to other lights?

The S2+ for example has a reasonable grip, but compared to the SC31pro, to my FC11 with rubber (bicycle) inner tube around the battery tube, and the Jaxman E2L, it is poor. I recall reading or watching some reviews from a guy in which he rated the grip, possibly with 0-5, was it pocket lamps or tools? It doesn’t come back to my mind at the moment. It may have been on a website with text reviews, or youtube. In any case, it came back to me as a reminder of an important part of reviews, some indication of grip level is essential.

Is that with the clip or without? I never use clips so I’m interested in weight without the clip. I’m also interested in the weight without the magnet! as to the magnet:

So, how easy is it to remove it? (either to not have it, or to put in a stronger one) Remove the spring and it drops out or need to heat up the tailcap a bit to break a hard glue that may be used, then tap it out? And what is the weight saving when removing the magnet?

I don’t see a price discussion which is essential for a review. Is ca. $70 worth it compared to say an FC11, SC31pro, E2L, Skilhunt M200 etc.? The first 3 are about half the price or less, the Skilhunt about $50, and the design may be the only thing the E18 has going for it. Perhaps without clip and magnet weight would be 50g? But that still doesn’t reach the even lighter Skilhunt M200.

I just remembered: the grip level was from reviews of darts, by “Worldwide darts” on youtube.

The polygonal knurling feels like it has twice as much grip compared to a Convoy S2+. It feels like it has a little bit more grip compared to a Sofirn SC31 Pro. It didn’t feel slippery in my hand or while wearing leather work gloves.

That’s without the pocket clip.

It’s 53.1g without the magnet.

It’s easy to remove the magnet. I used a screwdriver to carefully press the base of the spring inward so that it would pop out. And then I removed the magnet. It wasn’t held down with glue. It was pressed between the spring and tailcap. There’s a little cut-out in the tailcap for the magnet to sit in.

In my opinion, it is expensive at CA$70 compared to similar 18650 flashlights.

It depends what you’re looking for.

A Convoy S2+ is a great way to introduce friends and family to flashlights with a nicer tint where there are so many LED options.

A Wurkkos FC11 may make a better gift for family and friends in terms of value when looking for a complete kit (i.e. no external charging necessary).

I just bought a few Rider RX’s to give to family and friends as gifts after receiving one from a giveaway.

Ah, I’ve got a Winmau dartboard and a few darts with different grips in the garage. I’ll check it out.

Thanks for the added information. I also think the price is a bit high, at least for the low CRI LED. Modding is no problem but for a higher priced lamp I’d want it to come with a really good emitter in about 4000K (219C, SST20, 519A), that would give added value compared to many others. Perhaps also a programmable driver, that would be quite nice to have.

If the grip is that good then an emitter change would make it pretty good in total, grip, weight, output (SST20 should work, I did it in my FC11 which runs the LED at similar currents and it improved the beam a lot compared to the LH351D).

Taking all that into account, I agree on the comparisons. As a gift to anyone who is not already into exact differences of LEDs, then the FC11 in 4000K is better than the S2: lighter, better interface but not too complicated, fairly good light colour, built-in charging. And to those who are more into seeing what works best for them and want to try out various LEDs the S2 is cheap and you can experiment with them putting in different LEDs.

I’ll swap the SST40 out with this:

Talking about the bite of the grip design, for me the best or the grippiest of all the lights I owned is the Zebralight SC64.

Small, thin, fine knurling but surprisingly “sticky”.

Mmm, nice light, but yeah, ouch for 70bux.

Thank you for reviewing Brinyte E18!

Thank you Brinyte for the stunning E18 Pheme. Concerning the weak magnet, mine must be from a newer batch, holds tight to horizontal even on a rounded surface. The best 18650 front pant pocket EDC among my few dozen. It’s slimmer than everything, not too long or short, lighter than most, even the clip is better than most. Clip length is what really matters and they got it right on the E18, nearly 2/3 of the total length. It’s strong steel and there’s no slop in the channel either. It’s very secure and after a few minutes you want even know it’s there.
And yes what a looker, Pheme is a good word. Call it polygon or whatever but the treatment is classy and sophisticated, elite and executive looking. Definitely would win some beauty contests. Some emitter options would be nice but the SST40 with the TIR throws closely behind the FC12 and carries much better. Thanks again Brinyte.
