No, it won’t work unless you also switch to a driver that’ll provide the correct voltage of 2v.

Honestly, just purchase the Convoy C8+ red

Edit: It may work, but it also may not. If it does, it’ll not work too well due to the lower voltage requirement

> Can I swap this led

yes

but it might not work the way you hope
convoy uses a different driver for red than for white LEDs

even though the two LEDs have the same solder pad shape, they operate at different power levels

when I put a red LED into a 3 mode light, the red outputs were not properly spaced, nor as bright, as the original white LED.

otoh, Ive had better luck with Red LEDs that I put into lights that use Anduril. I dont know why:
.

Good luck with your Quest for a Red Light that meets your needs.

Are you saying the red needs a different driver ? Wow just as I thaight I was getting it lol
What changes ?
What light could I buy or what do I need to look for ?
They don’t list drivers inside do they , I guess anduril is a driver ?

I’d love to hear your quest my sim is to illuminate 40meters into the field for rabbits the red they can’t see at 660 so we get an advantage but the mission is putting it 40 meters
White light is a no brainer to shoot that far using amc7135 ×12 chips on board but red either has £££ or sucks
So I’m trying to make one though can’t find out what driver drop in and end plug to use

I conclude the xpg3 660 as the best red to do the job and used in the high end throwers but I can’t seem to lockdown the driver

Why not the 660nm Luminus SST20 in the Convoy C8+ I linked above? You’ll be getting a good 100m of good range on that. I reviewed the Sofirn D25LR using the same LED and I get 50m quite easily and that uses a much smaller reflector.

On digikey it says the max current for the Cree XPG3 Red is 1.5A, so you could use a driver with 4× 7135 chips for 1.4A. You won’t get very good performance since it’s still operating at 3v instead of 2v. It’ll work, but it will just lose 40% brightness within 10-15 min.

The new Convoy Red driver operates at 1.7A (specs say 2.5A) so perhaps you could use that one, you’ll just need to make sure the flashlight host will fit a 17mm driver. Convoy upgraded the driver at my request since I sell a heap of their models for hunting in New Zealand. I haven’t tried out this SST20 660nm yet, I’ve had good success with the Osram 620nm. Bunnies notice the 620nm, but calm enough to take the shot. I recently switched to infrared and it’s way better. The Convoy C8+ IR 850nm gets 300m easily and the L21B out to 500+ meters, great value

I dont think there is any difference between xpg3 660nm and the SST-20 660nm

I would take this advice and choose the 660nm option:

The cost of materials and supplies to build your own will be higher than the cost of a Convoy..

It should be only $21 usd from that link. You’d need to import it from AliExpress.

that does not sound correct

I did a google search of
Does Aliexpress deliver to UK?

result:
Yes, AliExpress does deliver to the UK. Delivery costs and times will vary depending on the seller. Many items offer free shipping via standard delivery, although wait time can be between 20 and 40 days.

£22.85 to the UK without any codes, i don’t know why you’re being given such a high price but it is wrong, it should be less.

I’m finding it very hard to follow your progress across multiple threads, and you seem to be missing information that has already been provided which is confusing me so i’m not sure what you’re actually looking at now, but some of your info is wrong.

The XP-G3 is not the best LED for throw as a general rule but it will work for you, it would help you to learn about the difference between brightness (lumens) and intensity (lux).

White LEDs start off blue and use phosphor to convert the light to white, and you can get LEDs that use phosphor to convert all the blue to red, but the XP-G3 (and XP-E2, and SST-20) use different semiconductor layers (i think) to start off as red which means they have different electrical characteristics to white LEDs, such as lower voltage requirements.
So while drivers intended for white LEDs can be used there needs to be an understanding of how they can be used, and some lower quality drivers may actually work better precisely because less voltage is needed.

You stated not wanting to use LI and would prefer AA, red LEDs lend themselves well to two AAs as the voltages are a better match but you seem to have switched to wanting LI, which is fair enough but you then need understanding of how to deal with the voltage mismatch.

Ha I think I found that same time Banggood
So this torch I’m being told is going to do my job fine ? Or it need altering any ? Ok stil I find white grrr haha can’t click your link ?

Yeah I am sorry I’m on a smal phone atm and at first the threads page was at the bottom till I turned the phone I couldn’t navigate around and yes il admit I am very lost trying to keep up with webpages and find things even read on here

I’d love to build one cause I have a strange bug to make shit myself and learn it my learning seems strangely irratic but then it clicks and I master things believe it or not lol

I build reef tank led panels which are amazing but it is totally different to flashlights and I work them by working my wattage out wanted and what I want to run the strips as which normally is 700ma and see how many strips I fit in there I add 100k ohm pots but the drivers are where I work from I get the best one I can and already know the strips bxeb gen2 eb series nwhich are a 255 3535 chips like hundreds of flashlights lol

This I didn’t realise somany mods could be done to flashlights and as. Am reading I’m like oh shit I wanna try that lol. Plug it mod it solder it add it wow

If the xpg3 and the sst aren’t the best red throwers and flooders what are
I just really want light up 50meters in 660 with some flood

The drivers seems to be hidden in the uk found
https://www.ebay.com/itm/115043959376 Which is long import but has 4 sst20 and a very nice driver to what I can make out in my noobyness

I play with baby leds I power a few Cree xp from a a batteries at my work unit and over my lathe lol they haven’t popped yet but wondering if a driver makes them brighter or just safer

I just thought I got led chip like do or xpg3
Got
https://gb.lightmalls.com/17mm-amc7135-x12-flashlight-circuit-driver-boa...
Them 12 black boxes ramp the ma up 350 each and add the leds. The tests I was shown show the reds being ran at 4000ma max in test so figured that cool
And then a

Then can lathe some walnut torch tubes li battery up and
Add a https://gb.lightmalls.com/ultrafire-501b-flashlight-remote-control-switc... Beam to the sky lol

So, complete torches:
The Convoy C8 will do the job as it is, the only thing you need to do is provide your own 18650 battery.

The link that Funtastic provided is direct to Convoy’s store which happens to be on Aliexpress so you will be buying direct from the manufacturer. The torch you found on Banggood is also available direct from Convoy.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001619537593.html
Simon, who owns Convoy, is an active member on here and there is a lot of good experience reported with his products and company. Plenty of reviews for you to read too if your phone lets you.

If you’re going to import an Emisar you’d be better off buying it directly from the manufacturer:
https://intl-outdoor.com/led-flashlights/emisar-d4v2-high-power-led-flashlight.html
This is also a complete light where all you have to do is provide the 18650 battery.
Hank, who owns Emisar, is also an active member on here and there is also a lot of good experience with his products and company, and plenty of reviews for his lights too.

The beam from the Emisar will be very different from the Convoy C8 though.

Throw and flood are a product of the LED and optic, you have to take into account the optic you are going to use when trying to get the right flood/throw. LED capabilites on their own are meaningless in this regard and the difference between the optics in these two lights makes much more of a difference than the difference between an XP-G3, SST-20 and XP-E2.
All of those LEDs in the Convoy C8 will throw more and have less flood than all of those LEDs in the the Emisar D4V2.

Another light to look at would be the Sofirn D25LR that Funtastic mentions:
https://www.sofirnlight.com/products/d25lr-rechargeable-headlamp-with-lh351d-5000k-white-led-and-sst20-dr-660-nm-red-led-micro-usb-charging-port?spm=..collection_1e687207-64a3-4368-97a2-7aa1082d1b81.collection_detail_1.5&spm_prev=..index.header_1.1

This would give you both a working 660nm red light and a high-cri white light and would provide a good introduction to both so you can then decide how much more flood/throw/brightness you want.
It will cover 50m though.
You can also order it with a battery and it has built in charging so you don’t have to buy a separate charger.
The build quality isn’t as good as either the Convoy or the Emisar because it’s not actually made by Sofirn, only modified and sold by them, but it’s good enough.

Going down the self-build route:
You already have an XP-G3, i can send you a 1.4A (4×7135 driver) to play with if you want. 1.4A should be more than enough to do the job, and when you do decide to upgrade to a 12×7135 driver you’ll see it doesn’t get anywhere near 3 times as bright because brightness isn’t linear to power.
The only thing to watch out for is that the 7135s will burn off all the extra voltage and i don’t know how well they’ll handle it. As lightbringer mentioned in one of the other threads you may well be able to run this driver from 2xAA alkalines but i don’t know how effective that will be.
The switch you need is just a switch to break the circuit, nothing special, just something you can use that can handle the power.

You have your own ideas and abilities with hosts, you will need to see if you want to use an optic or run the LED bare (which we call a mule light). And you will need to make sure that the driver and LED don’t overheat in the build, especially if you’re going to use wood.
In most torches the heat is conducted away from the LED and driver through the metal body, in wood you would need to provide a path to the outside world to prevent the electronics from overheating.

I’ve bought directly from Convoy so it’s just not liking your address for some reason. Really shouldn’t be a problem to mainland UK (which is where Surrey was last time i checked :D)

I don’t know how it works from a phone but when making a post there are boxes just above where i type, one of them is to insert a link (5th one in from the left).
As for hosting images, i use https://postimages.org/ . I upload the image to that host and then use the 7th box in from the left to insert the image.
You have to use an external host for images, this site doesn’t have the capability to natively host them.

I’m a hobbyist with a soldering iron who’s just continuing the generosity regularly shown by members on here. I’ve got waaaay too many white LEDs to use in a lifetime and a couple of spare drivers, so no cost for parts i’m not going to use.
I do have unused lights that i’m planning to sell on so we can see if any of those are suitable for you, and i’m thinking of the AA lights when i say that, but that’s a separate thing.
So yes, drop me a PM, lets see if we can get you up and running.

Glad you got the browser thing sorted, it may be that the wrong location is stored somewhere in Safari’s cache/cookies.
The Convoy is a good start though, it’ll give you a very good reference point from which to progress.

I don’t want to put you off using wood, i’m not a fabricator, you’re coming at this from a different perspective which can bring fresh information and i don’t want to restrict that. I was working from the point of view that you want to get up and running as quickly as possible and wouldn’t want to risk breaking any parts you bought, but you’ve ordered the Convoy and if i send parts for you to happily destroy you don’t have to worry about those and can just get on with experimenting and finding these things out in your own way Smile

There are fabricators on here and plenty of custom builds so browse around for those.

It will work IF your driver current is limited to 1.5A. the led it comes with has 3A limit. If you run the red on anything over 1.5A you'll fry it. and if your heat path isn't good, you'll fry it with even less current. Unlike white leds, color leds do not handle heat as well. so good heat path is more critical for color leds.
