..when i read a post, what happens?..

so

i like the fact that the site knows what posts i have read

and the fact that if i read an article, it sends me email the next time someone posts in that thread

so it knows every post i ever read

from that - it might deduce what i am interested in, what i might buy, where i might live, etc

does anyone ever contact the site admins, offering big bucks for that info?

just curious

in fact i don;t even know who the owners or admins are

if that ever happened - someone trying to buy user info from the site - who would benefit?

just curious

” follow the money ”

AFAIK you write about reading a post in the threads you yourself have subscribed to. PLUS you instructed the site to send a message to your own mail if there is any disturbance of the force.

Look into your account

= My account:

= Supscriptions

+ Do NOT send me updates by email for my subscribed threads

  • Do NOT automatically subscribe me to threads I create or participate in
  • Send me new post notifications by email even while I am logged on

IMHO everything you are experiencing you have brought on to yourself.
All you have to do now is just un-doing it.

My quess is that mr. Admin is busy enough with his regular duties to check upon everybody’s reading habits.

wle’s point is that no one knows who Mr. Admin is or what he does with the data. BLF could be a Chinese data farm for all you know.

Looking at the admins post history, I don’t see an “introduction post” or what not. Maybe it exists but I am not finding it and have never seen it.
As far as I know the Admin was/is from Brazil. I don’t know his technical background, occupation, age, business affiliations, etc.

I navigate this site with a certain degree of trust in its ownership, whether warranted or not, but I also know that anything I post can be capitalized on by anyone. More candid discussions occur in PM, exchanging contact information and commercial ideas, and it would be nice if those discussions did stay private, but of course anything particularly critical would be better discussed through more secure channels.

> if that ever happened – someone trying to buy user info from the site – who would benefit?

If that has happened, the chinese masterminds have not used the data to improve their lights - so much is clear. It is amazing how many good proposals to improve lights have been made in vain. Over and over again.

Oké, you’re right about that. But the symptoms wie mentioned are (imho) caused by the boxes he ticked in “My account”.

About Mr. Admin. It’s his site, and it’s his rules. And he watches that we keep coloring within the lines. And if not, we get a fair warning. Nothing wrong with that. Your membership goes back in time further than mine, but I’ve never had a feeling that there is more at hand with this site than meets the eye.
A feeling I did not have with the other site and “she whose name shall not be spoken”.

There is nothing going on here that is any different than any other forums I participate in. I think those email options in your account settings are enabled by default, you just have to turn them off. Heck, Reddit is even worse.

Me neither. I was just playing devil’s advocate.

i don;t feel a sense of dread here, true

it seems low budget and friendly

prob not watching me on the camera and selling me caskets if i happen to search ‘heart attack’ on some other site

unlike facebook or amazon

search for hamburger on amazon,
5 mins on google - there is an ad for burger king
