What is the best high-CRI RGBW LED flashlight for illuminating subjects during night photography?

Hello! I do a lot of light painting, and typically, I use a ProtoMachines LED2. However, it’s broken (and if anyone is selling a ProtoMachines, please contact me). :frowning:

So in case it cannot be repaired, what do you feel is the best high-CRI RGBW LED flashlights for light painting? And by “light painting”, I mean illuminating subjects while remaining out of frame while doing night photography. In other words, not “light drawing” of any sort.

I am aware of the RGB Critter 2.0, but am unsure if it can be used in the manner described above…as a flashlight, in other words. I don’t know if there are attachments that are conducive to this. I’ve also heard of the Nitecore SRT7GT (not sure if it’s high CRI) and Wurrkos WK40 RGBW, which would be extremely limited compared to the ProtoMachines or even the RGB Critter in terms of color creation.

See below for examples of light painting just to be sure I’m getting the point across. All these were done with a ProtoMachines LED2, so this gives you an idea of what I am looking for. Thank you in advance!

BLF member Stephenk is probably the most prolific light painter poster. While waiting for him to chime in on this thread you can check out his excellent and up to date reviews on his website https://www.stephenknightphotography.com/post/best-flashlights-for-light-painting-photography-2022

Nice work, by the way.

Did someone mention my name? Do you require RGBW individually or colour mixing? Also, do you need a floody or throwy beam? The Critter is pretty good for colour mixing (but not as good as the protomachines) and easy to use. You can also use the DIY Connector for beam collimation. The WK40 is only ok if you want to use RGB but doesn’t mix them well. LED Panel lights might be an option if you are OK with floodier light. Nanlite make one with more focussed optics.
