Zoom headlamps

I have a few of the Boruit single 18650 lamps that I use in my workshop and I’ve used them for hiking trips and MTB riding but I’ve seen a few reviews of the zoom lamps that makes me want one. Does these budget ones work good or are there other ones I should look into? Super happy with the cheap Boruit headlamps that I have and actually prefer them over a nitecore hc60 that is similar so I’m considering going for the cheap Boruit ones if it’s of the same quality. For more medium/high price range what brands should I look towards there?

The reason for going with a zoom is to have both flood and spot options but it might be better to go with dual lens config instead? 3x 18650, flood and spot is kinda the only requirements

Have looked into these two:

I use the Boruit headlamp on a daily basis. I really don’t care for anything that zooms unless it’s a camera and even then it’s a huge compromise compared to fixed focal length.

I purchased the Boruit headlamp for something like $8 each. I can honestly say it’s worth double that.

I’m with you on that compromise and that’s why I mentioned dual lens setups. It’s just that the boruit isn’t floody enough for some uses and doesn’t reach far enough at all times so I was looking for one unit that does it all. Now I often bring an astrolux flashlight for longer throw. For everyday use in the garage the boruit is still going to be the go to headlamp.

I totaly agreed on the Boruit lamp value. I have many since I thought at that price it wouldn’t last my use but I haven’t killed a single one yet. For everyday use it’s perfect

Yes agree, @ $8 each, I purchased four. I did not need four. I did not need one. But I have no regrets as this light is amazing and I have found many uses for it.

You can’t beat the Chinese for technology. Today you can buy a 32 inch TV for $80, or a 65 inch for $250.

What do you want to use the headlamp for?

An aspheric lens can give a very nice even flood beam. But the beam distance can be quite limited. The trouble is, when you zoom in an aspheric lens you end up with somewhat nasty beam the projects the LED die. Thus normally a square beam.

Something with a TIR optic would probably work better, but you are mostly limited to Led Lenser which are expensive. And aside from the optics, the Led Lensers sometimes aren’t the best spec in other areas.

I use it all the time this time of year. I’m in the polar circle for work now and the sun isn’t back until late in January so it’s dark all the time. I’m happy with the boruit for workshop use but for hiking and watching animals on the hike I sometimes miss long range and on most of the hike the boruit isn’t floody enough

I did see that in the reviews on YouTube :S

I’ll check out led lenser options if they are worth it,

Edit; oh and not all zooms suck  The Maxabeam works pretty good from flood to max zoomed apart from the ring in center on max flood but it’s not a biggie so it can be done.

If you’re a modder one answer would be to take a Sofirn version which has one red led and one white and make the red a high cri super sweet tint and add diffusion to one side . Their headlamp comes with a Samsung 351 high cri led that just needs a bit of minus green filter to improve its tint by knocking down its tendency towards green.
I haven’t seen specs on the red side but would assume they have the driver throttled back pretty far to not burn up a red led .
Someone at Sofirn should have gotten Convoy bold and done a Hank Wang and offered modded Dual boruit lights with every driver and led option under the sun .
My guess is the D15 zoomie version is just plain bad . Better to just JB weld a second light onto the first one .

What model Boruit headlamps are these and where to buy them for $8 each ?

I’ll pass the word on to a friend of mine. If you like , PM the info to me

Thanks :+1:

Anyone still make those aftermarket straps where you take a regular tubelight and strap it to the side of your head?

If so, an S11C would be nice. Goes “flood” to “spot” but smoothly, not like an aspheric. Seems to be a LEDLenser type system.
