SP33s xhp70.2

I had a couple of 28650s not being used so I bought a SP33s, cant have batteries just sitting around. I do like the light, feels right in the hand, the lighted switch is magnifique. The UI is basic but has ramping and steps, everything I like and nothing more. I knew the SP33s was a floody light before I bought it. I generally like my lights to be have a little more throw than flood.

I decided to slice the 5000k xhp70.2 led in my SP33s in an attempt to increase the throw. The throw might have increased but the K dropped to below 4000k, maybe below 3000k, with a 5000k hot spot. I regret doing this and am going to replace led with something, preferably something with more throw.

I see posts for using the xhp70.3 is there any other 5000k leds that might provide more throw and work well in the SP33s? Please provide a source of led with comments.

SP33s with short OP reflector is not a thrower by his nature

But you don’t like artifacts as well ? ;))

Just insert xhp70.3hi led - the simpliest way. For even more throw take xhp50.3hi and change the star with the led (mcpcb).

2 Thanks

Yes, I also recommend going the 70.3 Hi route (re-flowing xhp70.3 Hi onto the MCPCB). You can purchase them from Kaidomain in CCT’s from 3000k to 6000k and you get a modest bump in candela compared to the stock XHP70.2 (certainly not a “thrower” by any means though). I did this with two of my SP33S to get a warmer 3000k temp and have been very happy with the results.

1 Thank

I installed the new XHP70.3 led. The throw was increased. I was very happy with results.

I liked the light so much I ordered a second light with 5000k XHP70.2, maybe for a gift to wife or maybe just because if one is good two is better.

When comparing side by side, the increased throw from the XHP70.3 is very small. Maybe 5% increase. The narrower beam does help see between trees and buildings but the increase in throw is very small. The light still illuminates an entire room with ceiling bounce but when shining at a wall, the entire wall is no longer in the beam. Not really worth the time and cost of new led. I should have been happy with ONE SP33S.

To get significant increase in throw you need to use the bigger reflector with the same led or install new led with smaller LES.
Smaller if not the smallest 6v led is xhp50.3hi but you need to change mcpcb. If mcpcb in sofirn is typical 20mm - no problem, get xhp 50.3hi on mcpcb.

Or maybe you really need a thrower. Xhp70 in small reflector wouldn’t be a thrower anyway.
